Frohoss Posted October 20, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 20, 2008 Just curious if anyone out there has encountered any venomous snakes in the Caribbean? I know there are a few venomous species in the Caribbean. Maybe you have encountered them in the sea, in the jungle, cave tubing...or zip lining? I'm not looking for the odds of being bitten...just your encounters if any. Your stories are welcome...Thanks

tanyanubin Posted October 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 20, 2008 Saw a fer de lance in Belize. Very poisonous. Some guy at the side of the road had it. He offered to let us hold it. He said "15 minutes". We said "15 minutes what?" and he said "15 minutes is how long you have to get help if this bites you." We said no thanks. Funny (or odd) thing is that we found out recently that this same guy WAS bitten by that little snake. He was in a coma for 3 days! Yikes.
pungo3 Posted October 20, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 20, 2008 In all of my cruises, I've never seen a snake (any snake, not just venomous). I've done several 'jungle' excursions and seen some pretty big spiders but never a snake.

stu & SAND Posted October 20, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 20, 2008 The snake we saw and held on St Lucia, obviously not a very happy camper. We really scared the heck out of the tour operator and our fellow CC pals. stu
stu & SAND Posted October 20, 2008 #13 Share Posted October 20, 2008 Obviously this snake did not have any venom but I am not so sure about me...
Sandgnat Posted October 20, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 20, 2008 I was serious.... there are no venemous snakes in Jamaica.... which at last look at an atlas is in the Carribbean Jamaica has no snakes, they brought in mongooses to eat them. Now they are overrun with mongoose and they are causing damage. Cozumel has boa constrictors, they were let loose after a movie shoot and have caused a lot of problems eating the birds in the area. VolzCruiser Posted October 20, 2008 #15 Share Posted October 20, 2008 I saw a nice size grey snake at Half Moon Cay. I don't know if it was venomous or not. I didn't want to get close enough to find out.
HighSeaslover Posted October 20, 2008 #16 Share Posted October 20, 2008 snokeling in St. Thomas was saw a sea snake, the guide just had us all stop and let is swim by. cruiseapril Posted October 20, 2008 #17 Share Posted October 20, 2008 Have seen scorpions- many islands have them. The fer de lance resides in Martinique and St. Lucia. Cruisers need to be aware of these reptiles if they are hiking.
mrsfuzzmo Posted October 20, 2008 #18 Share Posted October 20, 2008 We stopped on our Dune Buggy tour for a boa constrictor (though non-venomous, pretty cool). He's just eaten something , as we could still see it in his belly. We all got to hold it (those of us who wanted to ) and then the guide set him back in the jungle on the side of the path. Really cool!!
momof1lilguy Posted October 20, 2008 #19 Share Posted October 20, 2008 I was told there is absolutely no snakes in St. Maarten (unless they are caged pets of course).. But they definitely have a mongoose problem!
sappygirl Posted October 21, 2008 #20 Share Posted October 21, 2008 We went to Chankanaab Park in Coz with some friends we met on board and they saw a black snake there. Not sure what kind it was.
seabrookcruiser Posted October 21, 2008 #21 Share Posted October 21, 2008 Several years ago we were doing the cave-tubing in Belize. I was at the end of the cave and was getting ready to just enjoy the tube ride down the river. As I came out of the cave, the current pulled me towards the rocky area along the bank. I used my foot to push off the rocks so I could get back into the main current. The minute I put my foot down, I noticed a snake coiled up on the rock above my shoe. Believe me, I pushed off real quick! One of the guides saw this happen, and stopped others from going in that direction. The guide did say it was one of their most dangerous snakes...but apparently they are not seen very often. I guess it was out sunning that day! Anyway, I loved the cave tubing. Dee777 Posted October 21, 2008 #22 Share Posted October 21, 2008 In January of this year, we were cave tubing in Belize. While walking through the jungle on our 45 minute trek to the river, we encountered a coral snake. Enough said. *shiver* I hate snakes.

G'ma Posted October 22, 2008 #24 Share Posted October 22, 2008 I was serious.... there are no venemous snakes in Jamaica.... which at last look at an atlas is in the Carribbean In the mid-1800's, mongoose were imported from India to the island of Jamaica to control the rats and mice. The little bugger also rid the island of snakes and lizards. When the lizards were gone, the lice and fleas took over. Lizards feasted on them. Mongoose also love ground nesting birds and their egs which has destroyed many indigenous birds from the island. The mongoose on Jamaica has no natural enemy, no predator. They are all over the place and are famously found as "road kill" on many roads. The only critters I've ever seen on any island are the gecko's and other smaller lizard-like creatures. And, some pretty big spiders which creep me out....... Never seen a snake.
CruiznWithHubby Posted October 22, 2008 #25 Share Posted October 22, 2008 Okie, dokie,,,,,, I am cancelling my cruise now:eek: Actually,,,,I've only ever been on one cruise, and we went to Nassau and a private island,,,,never saw any snakes,,,, but I have been on land tours all over the caribbean (including St Lucia, which was mentioned), still never saw a snake,,,,, Came damm close to being bitten by a baby rattler in Arizona though,,,,my pet dog saved me,,, I've been REALLY worried about jellyfish though,,,,,I'm bringing vinegar with me to take to the beach,,,,just in case,,, any tips on avoiding those? I've seen them on the beach in Clear Water and Sanibel here in Florida,,,,and they look so clear you can't see them hardly,,,,I heard Man of Wars were the worst, but aren't they blue and a bit easier to see for that reason??? Why I'd worry about them more in the Caribbean and Mexico than I do in my own backyard though, I do not have a clue,,,,,LOL,,,silly. Holly
