Accra vs Brighton Beach

We have been to Barbados three times. Each time, we have visited a different beach. We started with Boatyard and had a wonderful day of frolicing. The second visit was Brighton. The wide sandy beach goes on for at least a mile and when we were there 2006 it was deserted.

Theoretically Brighton is within a hike from the ship, but any adventurer would have to figure out how to get there through a industrial and commercial area. We took a cab there ($3) and he took us to the area where a lifeguard tower stands (although we didn't see anyone in it), the free changing rooms and toilets are located and where a restaurant rents beach chairs and such. At the stretch where we camped, the sand changed into a corally bottom, so I would advise swim shoes. Other sections may well have sandy bottoms, but we did not want to go far from the restaurant fromwhich we rented chairs. We liked the splendid quietude under the palms, although the paleface me got terribly burned.

In March we decided to try Accra, which has received rave reviews. A cab took us to some hotel and we simply walked through the lobby to the beach without any hassles. The Accra Beach is nice, filled with people and activity, but its sweep isn't as majestic as Brighton's. Accra wasn't our cup of tea but we enjoyed and the experience. It kind of reminded us of Mombasa area resort beaches in Kenya.

We will stop in Barbados again in February. We are most likely to return to Brighton.

While it's on the same beach and admittedly not as wide and windswept as Brighton, next time you ask a taximan to take you to Accra, say Accra/Rockley Beach.. not the hotel. Technically you shouldn't be using the hotel, and there are changing rooms, places to find food and drink and a nice beach to relax on just to the east of the hotel.

Can anyone tell me if there are a lot of pushy vendors on either of these two beaches?
You'll be lucky if you see any vendors at all on the Brighton/'Malibu' beach

- and the vendors at Rockley/Accra don't bother you

other than to ask if you need a chair and umbrella.

The guys are way cool, there...bin handling tourists nicely for decades,now..

The ladies who sell tropical print garments in their kiosks at Accra

wait for you to come to them.
