Prior to cruising there is an option to purchase onboard credit... I know we can't use it for gambling but what if we purchase it and then don't need to use the amount we have purchased...how will it be reimbursed..back to our credit card or will they pay cash at the end of the cruise... db

If what you mean by purchasing onboard credit is to "gift yourself" with money, you can use it for any thing you want including gambling during the cruise. If you use it for gambling it would be (I believe) subject to the 3% charge for withdrawing cash. At the end of the cruise mine has always been refunded in cash.

This just doesn't sound right! You put $ on your inboard account prior to cruising to spend for whatever on board and are charged 3% if you use it in the casino? Not saying they don't, but it just seems wrong to charge you if you have placed the money in advance instead of charging at the casino onboard! Cash may still be the best way to go!

We bring cash for gambling and additional tips... but for onboard spa, purchases, excursions etc. we would just rather have it there in onboard credit and since will use bank card will not have a credit card bill after we get home....I do know for gambling you can purchase chips prior to going too...has anyone done that before???

I gifted my mother chips the last time my parents cruised. There was a gift card in their cabin detailing the gift and she took it to the Casino and they gave her her chips ... which she put down on a table and promptly lost. :D

I just returned from the Maasdam yesterday.

Prior to the cruise I purchased ship board credit for my use on board. I have only one credit card now and don't use it.

I place $700 for my 14 day cruise. This was for my daily tips, themal spa and other normal ship items.

I didn't use it for cash advance. I did have a refund and they front office called me the last day to remind me about it.

I went down and cash out my account.

I know that the website suggest $60 a day, but I did it on how I purchase. I did make some purchases that I normally don't do on my ship account (new memory card for my camera and two bingo games), but I was never ask to bring it to the $840 total.
