Rare pierces Posted November 13, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 13, 2008 Welcome to: C.C.P.I.C.S. Cruise Critics Photo Instruction and Creativity Series(No direct sponsorship by Cruise Critic or any employee therof.) This is an independent effort by the regular posting community on the Photo Discussion board to provide instruction to new photographers just getting their feet wet and inspiration to experienced shutterbugs. The original discussion thread is here if you want to take a look: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=778546 Class 1: Introduce Yourself is still active, so feel free to post there too! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=791007 Class 2: Rule of Thirds is still active as well! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=791007 Class 3: Low-light Photography too! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=824433 Class 4: Using Filters is still kicking! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=835827 Class 5: Point of View has some points left! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=848866 Class 6 - Beyond the Rule of Thirds Here's the next installment! Less data in this one too. A lot of you are coming up with some fantastic shots and I have high hopes for this session. I have really just shared some info on clean composition and given some examples of out-of-the-box things that I have done. This class is up to you. I don't control the vertical, nor the horizontal, but I expect some shots from your own personal Outer Limits! :D Class 6 intro: http://www.pptphoto.com/ArticlePages/Class6.htm Happy shooting! TheRoff Posted November 13, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2008 Very nice article. Thanks for your work!! I am sure it will prompt some straight horizons, and maybe even some purposely slanted ones. Larry
Aplmac Posted November 13, 2008 #3 Share Posted November 13, 2008 Here's an example of how rule of thirds can clash nicely with a horizon slap-bang in the middle of the shot! :D
judynorth Posted November 13, 2008 #4 Share Posted November 13, 2008 The following pictures were taken the same day less than an hour apart. Lighting makes a huge difference: And this is a different perspective on the steeple:
judynorth Posted November 13, 2008 #5 Share Posted November 13, 2008 Here is a link to an online class on composition: http://asp.photo.free.fr/Composition/photoProgramCompMainClass.shtml I have used it with classes that I teach (computer classes for senior adults at my church). It is concise and easy to understand with decent illustrations. Making the students aware of composition has made them much better photographers because that actually look at what they are photographing rather than just "taking a picture." Thanks, Dave, for all your efforts. They are a big help to all of us.
Aplmac Posted November 14, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 14, 2008 The light fixture is in just the right place..two thirds up, two thirds across I didn't even think about this while composing. Everything just fell into place. Listen to your eye
TheRoff Posted November 15, 2008 #7 Share Posted November 15, 2008 I will get out and study a subject, right now I am tied to this computer and business travel. Here are a few past shots Got the late afternoon sun right here. Sometimes you just gotta have a slanted horizon. Eliminating unwanted reflections is a problem I have yet to conquer in out-of-the window aviation photos. Framed, but no scale. The runway in the center is a mile long. ARBORGUY Posted November 17, 2008 #8 Share Posted November 17, 2008 I took this in Arles, france this month, early morning, walkiing past a traveling fair...I liked the contrast and the reflections on the metal floor....
NMCruzzin Posted November 23, 2008 #9 Share Posted November 23, 2008 I took these with a Nikon Cool Pix - P&S, we decided just to take a small camera on this trip, but I think that I got a few that would go with this lesson: Tea time on the Pride: Reflection of fruit in tea pot: I like how the water sparkles in Cabo San Lucas: Carnival has 'Walk on Deck for the Cure" Raising money for Breast Cancer. Since my younger sister lost her 3 yr battle to Breast Cancer 4 months ago....it meant a lot to me to get to be with those who walked - and I created these shots to remind me of that day:
NMCruzzin Posted November 23, 2008 #10 Share Posted November 23, 2008 Here are a few pics that I took last weekend: Something with cool feet was walking through this sand! This stuff makes me sneeze!! A quick shot before the sun set:
Kane Posted November 25, 2008 #11 Share Posted November 25, 2008 Dave presented the "assignment" after we had departed, so I didn't have a chance to directly work on it on our voyage. I must admit that I had to read the assignment 3 times before figuring out we're looking for alternative composition. I'm just beginning to sort through my photos, but figured I could add the following series, taken on the day of embarkation: Standard and boring but obligatory photo of our ship: Then I noticed a giant birdbath that the seagulls were playing in on the dock: And figured if I squatted down 12", I could simulate the ship floating in the birdbath: Didn't come out exactly as I wished, but it's sort of a "negation of scale" mentioned in the class notes. Aplmac Posted November 28, 2008 #12 Share Posted November 28, 2008 Taken with a Nikon D60 on a tripod and the new 18 -105 Nikkor zoom lens Exposure was surprisingly short ...somewhere around 1/125th. of a second I think (so much light around!) TheRoff Posted December 4, 2008 #13 Share Posted December 4, 2008 It took a while, but here is my contribution to this class. It started with a grab shot of a wine glass on a vacation, Ah, wine and glasses. Definitely a fun subject. It was fun composing and playing with Photoshop. Here is the whole set. http://www.pbase.com/roffee/wine Larry

TheRoff Posted December 4, 2008 #15 Share Posted December 4, 2008 Jean, Thanks for the compliments. Your shots of your running shoes, particularly the one where the bracelet almost glows are fantastic. We offer our sincere condolences. Cancer is not nice at all. NMCruzzin Posted December 5, 2008 #16 Share Posted December 5, 2008 Thanks Larry for your kind thoughts. I am working on an album of my sister....and I think that shot will be the one that I use on the last page. My son saw those pictures and asked 'who took those pictures of your shoes?' I told him I did...I'm taking an on line photography class and our assignment was kind of on, "being creative". He said he'd give me an A! LOL... I told him we don't actually get graded - but how much I've learned from the classes, assignments, getting to see others pictures, getting to know others on this board , encouraging each other and adding comments ~~ That's the enjoyment and reward of being on CC and Dave putting these classes together!! :D Have a great weekend all .... and keep those cameras busy! :D
oceanbums Posted December 9, 2008 #17 Share Posted December 9, 2008 These were taken at a local festival last weekend. I was going for the abstract shots with the first two; the necklace display and the "spinners" , not sure what they're called. The 3rd shot is a cropped version of one of the spinners and the parrots were so colorful, and they posed so nice for the picture:D
