Delta carry on bags?

Has anyone flown Delta airlines recently and were you able to use a suit bag as a carry on or did they make you check it. We were planning on using one as a carry on for our cruise out of San Juan but when we looked at the total inches allowed, its over the 42 inches... Do they still let you hang them in the front of the aircraft?

Chances of being able to hang the bag in the closet are small and none. As more people try to avoid the checked bag charge, gate agents have been instructed to be more stringent in what they allow on-board. Their jobs and promotions are at stake. While someone may occasionally slip a larger bag by, don't ever count on it. You do have 45" linear inches (proportional) for the bag, not 42".

The small closets are for first class passengers' coats and some crew items. If you do get the garment bag on-board, best bet would be to lie it flat over the tops of other bags in the bins.

We are flying Delta next week, and I actually hope that no one is allowed more than their fair share of carry-ons. We all need bin space.

From the Delta website (these days they are serious):

Carry-on

Size and Weight Restrictions If your carry-on bag doesn't meet these size and weight restrictions it must be checked, and all checked baggage rules will apply. Your bag must:

  • Weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
  • Not exceed 45 inches (length + width + height).
  • Fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
  • Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

Sure, if it exists on your aircraft and if you are flying in first. Otherwise, if your carryon is over the limit, you will need to check it. Shorex is absolutely correct; overhead space is getting tight on some flights.
