Kikkycat Posted December 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 17, 2008 I want to purchase some curacao liqueur while visiting the island. We do not have any excursions planned, instead focusing on exploring Willemstad by foot for the day. Am I better off getting a taxi to take me to Chobolobo to buy directly from the distillery, or will I find island-made liqueur (not Hiram Walker curacao!) somewhere else in town at a good price? cruiseapril Posted December 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 18, 2008 Although you can buy Curacao liqueur in town, a visit to the Distillery gives you the opportunity to taste the liqueurs. A taxi ride should be about $10 pp round trip (that's what we paid to ride to that area from Willemstad.) If you have not seen a landhouse, the liqueur distillery is housed in one- so that is interesting. On the other hand, if you don't want to spend the $ on a taxi- buy in town. Willemstad is a great walking city with lots of colorful shops.
carib_traveler Posted December 22, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2008 The distillery is pretty interesting to visit (also because of the landhouse) but you can buy the liqueur itself in just about every shop in Punda. The original one is the one in the round bottles (there's some knockoffs in high conical bottles) and it tastes nothing like Hiram Walker Curacao - or Bols Blue Curacao for that matter - which is just colored gasoline in comparison. GCurry Posted December 31, 2008 #4 Share Posted December 31, 2008 http://www.curacaoliqueur.com/ We missed the Distillery, but did pick up a large bottle at a Best Buy foods for US $17. Along the waterfront it ranged for $20 to $25 for the same size.
stampincheryl Posted January 2, 2009 #5 Share Posted January 2, 2009 What is a landhouse? I googled the distillery and it shows pictures of a mansion is that what a landhouse is?
cruiseapril Posted January 3, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2009 Hi- A landhouse is an old Curacao farmhouse/estate. Most were built in the 1700's & 1800's. There are about 50 still standing-very interesting buildings.

Cruising-along Posted January 4, 2009 #8 Share Posted January 4, 2009 Kikkycat, thanks for asking this question! We want to visit the distillery too, and this really helps. Thanks GCurry for the link! We'll be there on a Sunday -- I see that it is open on weekends if there is a ship in port.....so I'm hoping this means we can get in! :)
