Corkle Posted April 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2004 What's a good family beach that's close to the ship in Barbados? TIA Happy Sailing!! the_psycho Posted April 20, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2004 I guess that depends on what you mean by family beach. What are you looking for? I like a beach with some moderate surf, so that I can bodysurf and relax to the sound of crashing waves. The pink beach near Sam Lord's castle is my preference (and that of many of the crew if my last trip is any exapmle). I would never dream of taking anyone under the age of 12 here though, as the currents are really strong, too strong for someone under that age. What are you looking for? Grandma Dazzles Posted April 20, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 20, 2004 The beaches in Barbados are beautiful, but very different, depending upon location. Believe there is a "tourist" informtion office at the cruise terminal. The terminal is modern, with shops, etc. and an abundance of cabs/drivers. The beaches on the north and east of the island are not recommended for swimming (Atlantic side of the island). Previous poster mentioned Sam Lords Castle - hotel/resort closed a couple of years ago - don't believe it has re-opened. It's on the opposite side of he island. They have beautiful cliffs, crashing waves, etc. The south beaches (St. Lawrence Gap area) - Dover beach area are calmer, but can be rough, depending on the weather. The south beaches are where the Atlantic meets the caribbean. The calmest, possibly best bet for a family swim and also closest to the cruise terminal are the west coast beaches. All the beaches in Barbados are public, even if they appear to be right in front of a hotel. Barbados Tourist Authority I believe has a web site with a lot of information. Hope that helps. It's a beautiful island with wonderful people. Bridgetown is a very busy, congested city, I wouldn't spend a lot of time there, other than perhaps to take some pictures, etc. Enjoy your cruise! awatt Posted April 20, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 20, 2004 We enjoyed the Boatyard very much. Its a bar/restaurant about 5 mins from town. Surf was very calm, easy for kids to swim. They have chairs and umbrellas,a water trampoline and iceberg, and a few floats. Next door there are jet skis, banana boats for rent. Lunch was good. There was a $7 cover charge, but they gave it back to you in tokens to buy food and drink. I have no ohter experience in Barbados to compare it to,but we had a wonderful day. We still talk about it. Corkle Posted April 21, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Thank you all for your suggestions! The Boatyard sounds just like what we're looking for! I think I'll do a little more research on the web now that I've learned more about the island. Thanks again!! Happy Sailing!!
