Low Cost outings - Skagway

What are some low cost outings in Skagway? We are only doing 2 excursions (Juneau and Ketchikan) but we love to explore on our own.

 

Thanks to another thread, I've already found out about the shuttle in Juneau.

 

So what about Skagway?

 

Our other option is we may rent a car but is there alot to do in SKagway, in walking distance?

Skagway has wonderful hiking trails of all difficulty levels from easy up to difficult, and a free historic walking tour by the NPS, but heading north by car or tour offers you an incredible variety of scenery as you head up my way. You're probably there for 134-14 hours so there are LOTS of possibilities. I was going to drive to Skagway today but the avalanche hazard is too high so I'll hold off a bit.

The best low-cost excursion out of Skagway is to rent a car and drive to Emerald Lake or Whitehorse. The second best is to get a ride with Dyea Dave out to Dyea and take the NPS guided walk and hike a couple of miles on the Chilkoot Trail.

I never even thought about driving back into Canada. I'd love to go to the Yukon.

We are travelling with friends so Im making a list of things to do so we can pick together.

freckledcat - I just noticed that you're from TO. Canadians can't rent a car in Skagway and drive into Canada - it's a Canada Customs rule. :(

We killed most of the day just walking around, relaxing and shopping. Later, we took a bus tour to Canada. That was pretty inexpensive from what I remember.

Some Canucks have been able to get a non-Canadian to drive the vehicle by posting on their ship's Roll Call here. Sourdough in Skagway rents vans so you could travel with friends too.

Yes, find an American if you can to drive the vehicle. Crazy rule I wrote my MP about but nothings changed.

We enjoyed the drive from Skagway to Emerald Lake very much. We even saw a mama bear and cubs beside the road which was a high point!

Take a quick hike to Yakatania Point, which is more like a long walk from the cruise dock. You can access this area by crossing a footbridge on the other side of the airport. Just follow the footpath down to the water and you may find a family of seals basking in the sun.

I just booked our car through Avis in Skagway for May 19 and had limited choices so if that's what you are planning to do best book it soon...the drive to Emerald Lake is lovely and my new DH has never been up that way.

one of my favorite excursions on our last trip to Alaska was to hike around Lower Dewey Lake. We took our time and had lunch during the trip....took about 3 hours and was just a beautiful day.
