mtnhappy Posted January 22, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 22, 2009 How safe are the grizzly bear viewing trips? We are looking into doing one in Lake Clark National Park, but I would imagine the safety concerns would be the same for any of the areas where they do bear viewing. Do the bears pretty much mind their own business while you're viewing them? Has anyone ever had a bad bear viewing trip experience?
mtnhappy Posted February 7, 2009 Author #2 Share Posted February 7, 2009 FYI We called the Lake Clark National Park Ranger District, and they assured us that the bear viewing is safe, and no one has ever gotten hurt! :o
wolfie11 Posted February 7, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 7, 2009 The bears will do their part (leave you alone) as long as you do your part. Don't feed them or leave human food around that they can access, don't litter, including cigarette butts, don't yell at then or otherwise make loud noises, and do what your guide tells you. Yelling and making noise is exactly what you are SUPPOSED to do to make sure the bears hear that you are coming. You do NOT want to surprise them on a trail. While you're actually watching the bears from a viewing stand, then you have to be quiet or you'll scare them away.
