ShrinkinTexas Posted January 23, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Saw that carnival has a cenote trip. Can this be done on my own versus thru the ship? I've done it once and leery about it. But, that was a few years ago. Can I hire a driver at the port to take me there, versus via the bus into Merida? Who do I contact. Port time is 7:00a-4:00p. WilliamLawson Posted January 23, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Heck, I'll take ya! :) What cenote do you want to go to?
ShrinkinTexas Posted January 23, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted January 23, 2009 For the life of me, I can't remember the name of them, but they are about 1.5 hours from Progresso. You get on a horse (mule) carriage and go off into the jungle. There are 3 cenotes there. I think it is the same place the ship goes to, but they only visit 2 cenotes and the 3rd one is the best!!! WilliamLawson Posted January 23, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2009 If I'm right, the cenotes you are referring to are the ones at Cuzama. There are three in a row, and you take a 'truck' (which is a form of rail transport used during the sisal hacienda days) to each cenote.
ShrinkinTexas Posted January 23, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted January 23, 2009 That's it. Could we get from the port, see all 3, and back between the hours of 7:00 and 3:00 or 3:30??? Would you be allowed on the bridge to pick us up from the port, or must we go into Progresso? How much would you charge for the transport for 2 adults? Just to make sure, you would wait on us at the cenotes, right?
WilliamLawson Posted January 23, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Yeah Cuzama sounds like fun. Of course we can't have any crass commercialism on this forum so I would suggest having a look at a site that looks at life in Merida from a neurotic foreigners POV and poke around there. There is also a blog on Merida's restaurants as well which might help if you are looking to have lunch in the formerly white city! Happy planning! :)

I went to the three Cozuma cenotes a few weeks ago (while not on a cruise). I enjoyed them very much, but I am not sure I would take a chance on going on a tight cruise ship schedule. You need a few hours there, and traffic might make the trip longer than anticipated. For example, we ended up trying to get through a town on market day. It was interesting, but we didn't move for a long time.
pookiesmother Posted February 21, 2009 #11 Share Posted February 21, 2009 Hi everyone. I'm a newby. How deep are the cenotes.
BrownBearBread Posted February 26, 2009 #12 Share Posted February 26, 2009 Anyone know how much per person is the Carnival's "Rail cart to Cenote Underwater Exploration" Excursion? BTW the Carnival site is saying "Sold Onboard Only" no price.
vhorsen Posted March 1, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 1, 2009 ShrinkinTexas, Just curious on what you ended up doing? We are interested in doing something like this and I just wanted to know what you thought of it. Thanks!
ShrinkinTexas Posted March 1, 2009 Author #14 Share Posted March 1, 2009 I've done it once (on my own) and it ranks as one of my favorite excursions! However, we were the VERY LAST ones on the ship, once we stepped inside, they pulled up the walkway! I would be interested in hiring someone for the day to take me there again. I've contacted William Lawson (e-mail on web-site) and he might take us there.
