ColoRockiesFan Posted March 8, 2009 #26 Share Posted March 8, 2009 I just returned from my 3rd solo cruise (Carnival Miracle) and this one was the best. I met lots of wonderful people from my roll call meet-and-greet, met others just hanging around the ship (I love the Lido deck) and in the casino, etc. My dinner set-up was a bit weird (I was at a table for 4 but I was the only one to show up during the entire cruise) but I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was spoiled rotten by my waiter and his assistant (thank you Fernando & Molly). Although I am usually a bit introverted with people I don't know, I just had a incredible time. It was the perfect mix of privacy and socializing. Hi,:) glad you had an incredible time:D but really sorry you sat alone for dinner all week:( As many times as I have sailed solo dinner time is one of my favorite parts of the day. I would have asked to be moved after night 2 or 3. Glad you had fun though:)

cpcanuck Posted March 9, 2009 #29 Share Posted March 9, 2009 Ahh DBG258RTR .. reading this makes more sense to me .. you're not used to being solo because you're married, so seeing couples might make you feel that you aren't in your usual element. I've been travelling solo for a decade, and don't feel a need to gravitate to other solos to feel normal (well, being part of a couple or group is considered the only definition of normal to many people). I'll admit there were times on the first few trips that I wished I had someone to enjoy special moments with .. not so much now though because doing your own thing any time day or night is truly a blast! Travelling solo is wonderful on it's own without finding others, and when you do meet some of the many great people on board (staff included), enjoy good conversations, or just enjoy the exciting moments of travelling to new places, it's merely icing on the cake!! And for the other married solo travellers --- absence makes the heart grow fonder!!! LOL ... sorry, I'm trying to dig myself out of a little overkill here. Whether single or solo, you have the opportunity to connect or not .. your choice!! Bang on sailaway fan! I have travelled solo my whole life and know no other way! I am able to engage other people when I want to and am quite comfortable doing my own thing and do not feel "abnormal" if not connected with other solos :) . Only 12 more days until I sail! Wahooo!! cpcanuck

Although I will take a weekend trip with a friend or take my kids on vacation, travel for pleasure has always been on my own and I, too, "know no other way!" :)
bobbisailsolo Posted March 9, 2009 #31 Share Posted March 9, 2009 HI Guys, just going to put my two cents in here. I am not a social butterfly, and it's not important to me when I cruise that I have lot of fun and entertainment. I choose to cruise because I can be by myself, without being totally alone. I can see new places and experience different cultures conveniently and somewhat cost efficiently. And most of all I can RELAX. I prefer open seating, because sometimes I want to be with people, and sometimes I would rather eat alone. I have found that the best places for me to strike up a conversation is not necessarily at a bar (I am not much of a drinker) but more often on deck or sitting by a window in a lounge area. I really like cruising solo.. dont think i would want it any other way, (unless my sons, both grown, would join me)
rob51 Posted April 9, 2009 #32 Share Posted April 9, 2009 Hi everybody, I am booked to cruise on the Carnival Glory sailing May 23, 2009 and this will be the first time going solo for me. My daughter decided she didn't want to go with me...said she gets bored while on the ship, but not on excursions. Its because she has a difficult time meeting others her own age group. I decided to go by myself and have a great time anyway. I would like to meet other solo cruisers to at least do some things with, hang out or whatever it may be. Rob ROB,,,,,, The Dining Room is a good place to meet other Solo/Single Cruisers..... The reason I say the Dining Room.... Because Carnival is good to sit Solo/Singles together.... Sometimes might be Sisters traveling together or Brothers,or maybe Mothers with their grown Children..... Or Fathers & Sons... One time when I was on the FANTASY everyone at the table was solo cruisers.... HAVE A GREAT CRUISE..
Kween Karen Posted April 10, 2009 #34 Share Posted April 10, 2009 My 1st solo cruise is coming up in 6 months. My last cruise I went with a friend but we did most activities separately as we don't have the same interests. We ate dinner and spent most evenings together. During the day I just did whatever I felt like doing at the time. No matter where I went there were people to visit with.....and at breakfast or lunch I would just look for a table with vacant seats and ask if I could join then.....after a few days I was joining people I had chatted with previously. It worked very well.
buggystuff Posted May 9, 2009 #35 Share Posted May 9, 2009 It would be said about me that I've never met a stranger more than once, so I may be a bit more outgoing than some. That being said, I've met more folks, both male and female, in ; A. the piano bar 2. on deck (saying corny things/lines like "are you going to <insert> "the next port too?" Or, playing the goofy games. Hey, once you've decided that you will probably not see most of these people and being embarrassed is simply not a concern, it's really easy to talk to folks 3. Standing around the gangway. It's kinda easy to spot the newbies, and the ones that don't really have a "purpose". They are normally actively seeking someone to be a bit more "comfortable" with With assigned seating at dinner, it's the "hey, my sister is single" syndrome. And I don't think that's the best opportunity at all. From a man's point of view, he's thinkin' "Cinderella's ugly stepsister", and she's thinkin' "don't even think about gettin' next to this just because we're set up" Not that it can't happen, just the odds are way off Just my bit, I could be wrong
sanuk4u Posted May 9, 2009 #36 Share Posted May 9, 2009 This post will help me as well as I am sailing solo in a couple of weeks. Well, two solo gals hanging together. I would think to meet those with the same interest to hang out in places you enjoy. IF you like to drink, the bars; gamble, the casino, or work out and hang at the gym or something. You would hope that others interested in the same thing say hi or welcome you in some way. I just look forward to meet people at dinner and randomly everywhere. :) T
kcool Posted May 9, 2009 #37 Share Posted May 9, 2009 i find that hanging out at the pool bar during the day and the sports or casino bar at night gives you the best chance of meeting people including singles.
ATL2LAS Posted May 10, 2009 #38 Share Posted May 10, 2009 I have always met really great people in the casinos on my solo cruises. I have also met some great folks in the piano bar. I hardly ever eat in the MDR when I cruise solo because I tend to forget that I am scheduled to eat at a certain time.
