Livorno to Lucca by train

Morning. Has anyone gone from Livorno to Lucca by train? If yes, I would greatly appreciate how this was done. For example, did Oceania offer a shuttle bus from the ship to the end of the pier? Are there buses at the end of pier to take you to the train? Where do you transfer on the train? Any info would be great. Thanks.

A Cruise Critic member has put this very useful site together:

http://www.ftroute.com/LIV_LUC_LIV.htm (info on getting to Lucca from Livorno)

http://www.ftroute.com/LIV_FIR_LIV.htm (info on getting from pier to Livorno station). Boils down to two options: taxi or shuttle bus and then local bus.

We went to Lucca from Livorno but rented a car and drove there. There was a car rental person on the pier and the car was there ready for us. It cost about $100 for the day. The drive was very easy and we returned the car to the pier.

We just did Livorno to Lucca in November.....there is a bus stop about a block from the port that takes you to the train station. It is one euro....you can check the train schedule on line....you will need to change trains in Pisa....there is a small train to the right of the first track which goes directly to Lucca. In Lucca you just walk across the street from the station and through the walls of the city. It is a lovely place, enjoy.

We took a cab in Livorno at the train station after a day in Florence and struck up a conversation with the driver. We ended up hiring him to take us to Lucca the next day. It was worth every penny - he drove us to Lucca, it was a Sunday so we went to the market, Mass, walked around town then met him at the square and he pointed us in the direction of the best restaurant in town - Buca di Sant'Antonio- where he had booked lunch reservations for us(there was a crowd trying to get reservations so we were very thankful that he had done this or we wouldnt have gotten in). We had a delicious lunch and then headed back to the ship. A wonderful day. This was last November - can't recall exactly how much we paid but I think it was around $200. It was a magical day.

We did Livorno to Lucca, and had a beautiful day! The ship does not provide a shuttle, but there is a city bus..ask at the desk, which one, not far from the pier. We took that to the train station. At the train station, it is easy to find the train to Lucca. We got off at the University station, and walked over to the Leaning tower of Pisa for a couple of pictures. We went back to the University station, got on another train, and went to Lucca. Do not forget to get your ticket validated at the stations.

Lucca is a lovely way to spend a day. If it is a nice day, walk around the city on the walls, then go into the town.

CoolCruisin', Do you happen to have contact information for the driver who drove you to Lucca? We are interested in a similar trip. Thanks. -Judy

Can you confirm that there is a city bus at the Livorno cruise dock to go to the train station? I gather the port is very big, is the bus stop left of right of the port and what is the bus number? We had a hard time getting bus information at our last Mediterranean cruise as everyone, incl. the cruise line, is in the business of selling transport that is much more than cost of a bus. Thanks.

Not only did we do Livorno to Lucca by train, but we made a stop in Pisa on the way back to the port. After you leave the train in Pisa, buy your ticket for the bus and go across the street and the bus will take you to the Tower, and then you reverse it. We had a wonderful day in both places. I gather there is more than one place to dock - one nearby and one that is not. Livorno is an industrial port. If you are at the further one (at least) you are not allowed to walk and must take the (free when we were there 1.5 years back but much debate on this issue on the Ports of Call board when we were checking it out) port shuttle bus. It does NOT take you to the train station bus to the Cathederal Sq.

See Friscoray's links in post #2. The links are to a great web site by a CC member with step-by-step on how to get to the trrain station by bus from the port and various train schedules. It is very good.

If you do take the train I advise on buying your train tickets along with the bus ticket at the Tobacco shop (on your right as you walk from where the shuttle bus drops you off to where you catch the city bus to the train station. You can buy the return tickets as well and save time in lineups at the train station and on the bus.) Remember to stamp / validate your tickets on the bus and before you board the train!

Or get a taxi from the port to Lucca - they are happy to take tours but sometimes not so much just to the train station YMMV

Hi. I was the original poster. We ended up docking at the smaller marina which is very close to where you can get a bus to the train. You buy the bus ticket at the newstand in the square. The day we were in Livorno was Italy's version of July 4th so the train schedules were very different from a regular schedules. Check the schedules before you leave home to see if it is an Italian holiday. We purchased a round trip ticket and got off the train at Pisa and wandered around and then got back on the train to Lucca. A very enjoyable side trip.

Cruise lines offer no shuttles..u might need to take a taxi.

Be aware that in Italy the trains ( and for that matter, the planes) strike on a moment's notice.

you might want to do a private tour with another couple...

when will u be in Livorno???

Andy
