I was on the Freedom last week and we saw the wine like at home. We were in Chops and it was only $1.00 more than what we would by it for at our local wine cellar. We could not believe it.

Oh! I forgot to tell you this, when we went to the main dining room it was not on the menu, so we told them we had a wine in Chops that we really liked. Our waiter therefore got a second bottle for us even though it was not on the wine list in the main dining room.

Also, if you do not finish your wine at night they will cork it for you and you can have it the next night in the main dining or chops or portofinos. We did!

hello all

ive read that the cheaper wines have a drastic mark up on them.... so what do you think is the best bang for your buck??

Wine & Dine package gives you a little discount. It's very irritating to pay $28/bottle for wine that usually costs $7.99 at home! But, they have a captive audience! :D

I have only cruised Disney so far and found the wine packages quite reasonable. It isn't just cruise ships that mark wine up but also restaurants.

In a lot of my favourite UK restaurants, a decent bottle of wine is usually £65 plus, which works out at over $100, so the wine package prices on RCCL seem quite reasonable in comparison.

From reading trip reports, I have noticed that they are charging far more for drinks in general on the European trips than the Caribbean ones and I find that a bit annoying, as I have always found alcohol in Europe to be cheaper than it is in the States. Maybe they make less money on the casino on European cruises, so they have to make it up on alcohol or something.

Are you buying the wine on your own for 7.99 and if you are what would it cost at an upscale restaurant?

I don't know any upscale restaurant where I live that would serve you a bottle of ANY wine for 7.99. More like 17.99 or 27.99 or more.

RCCL's wine buy the bottle is not to far off from upscale restaurants.

Maybe if you eat at Hardees or Macs you might get a bottle for 7.99

If I understand the previous posts, the selection of wine in Portofinos and/or Chops is not the same as the main dining room. If that is correct, is there a location on the RCCL web site on the ship or the ship that lists ALL the wines available on a particular cruise?

I have looked at the wine list on Voyager of the Seas. I am a Chardonnay drinker. The choices were small. The have a Chardonnay called Stone Cellars by Beringer 31.00 a bottle..I priced it at Specs for 5.99 it also comes in a big bottle. I haven't tried it but I plan to. Also they have Sonoma-Cutrer fro 51.00! Ridiculous. I will pre buy a couple bottle is it's drinkable, but not too happy about those choices at those prices. It practically FORCES be to take bottle in my suitcase. I am willing to spend a couple of hundred bucks for 7 days for the two of us, but come on. 30 and 50 bucks? I guess I need to check out the wine and dine packages.

I don't see the wine we had in Chops, Cakebread Chardonnay, on that wine list, but I know we had it. Maybe Chops has a different wine list. I did not study the wine list when they handed us the wine list. When I saw the wine we like and the price I quickly asked for it. The waiter actually laughed and said that was the quickest anyone has ever picked out a wine.

I know the wine was not on the main dining room wine list but our waiter got us another bottle anyway. He was wonderful!

It is Chardonnay called Cakebread! It is not a cheap wine, but we usually get it for special times and this was one of them.

ahhh cakebread. Since I live right next to the Napa Valley, I decided to do a little wine tasting last weekend, and Cakebread was one of my stops. Very good wine. And yes, it is no cheapo place.

Set,

I have seen this list before but forgot where it was. Thanks for the update.

What I didn't see was the 2 wines mentioned above, namely the Cakebread Chard and the Caymus Cab. I have had both in the past and found them to be excellent. It would be great to have them available in the MDR but niether appears on the list. Are they only available in the specialty restaurants? If not, where is the list that shows they are available?

That's interesting. I've always found it to be the opposite. In fact, I think that liquor prices anywhere in Europe (**) are exhorbitantly high compared to here in California. The only drink that I would say is on a par or a little cheaper is beer. I have found that the price of liquor in UK discount stores to be about the same or higher in £'s as it is in $'s in the local supermarkets here.

(**) I am including the UK in with Europe in this statement, but I don't consider the UK to be part of Europe, if that's what God had intended, He wouldn't have made it an island.:D

There is a note at the end of the list that tells you they add wines for different cruises etc. and to check with the M'd. Check the last page on the file. I also thought they had the prices but I can't find that, maybe someone else?

Is there any way to pre-order maybe 6-8 bottles of one particular wine that is not on the wine list and not in the wine package? We've looked over both, and don't really see many decent french or italian wines, which we love.

Thats a very good question and probably can only be answered from Miami.Different example, Once when we were on a 12 day we wanted to order a 7 day wine package, were told no, and I asked then why is the 7 day price there. It took some doing, and the M'd showed up at the table the first night and said it was approved and the approval was from Miami and we got a list for 7 day. 12 bottles was too much. So call and ask,it can't hurt.

On our last cruise with RCCL we bought a Lindeman's Pinot Noir for $35.00. When we got back from the cruise, we found that wine at our local PA liquor store for $9.99.

So there is a very large mark up on the wines, but if you want a glass of wine with dinner, then you pay the price.

You can also go to Chops and/or Portifino the first day and ask to see the wine list. Then ask the MDR maitre'd if you can get it in MDR.

That's probably the best idea.

Here''s a link to the wiine list from 2008 on the Explorer. No guarantee that's it is up to date, but at least it gives you a framework!

Note that the page is missing the first 2 letters. Should be:

Also, looks pretty accurate but I expect the prices to increase by my cruise in April.
