Helsinki HKL 1 Day tourist ticket

Recommended Posts

Planning our upcoming trip and I'm wondering if the 1 day HKL tourist ticket can be purchased as you get on the tram?

Yes - but not anymore the drivers... but machines...

http://www.hel.fi/wps/portal/HKL_en/Artikkeli?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/hkl/en/Tickets

I also understand the 1 day ticket gives you admission to the ferry to the fortress is this true?

That's correct. If you use the "public" HKL-Ferry.

http://www.hel.fi/wps/portal/HKL_en/Artikkeli?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/hkl/en/Tickets/Ticket+types/Tourist+Ticket

Also what did you pay for the ticket?

http://www.hel.fi/wps/portal/HKL_en/Artikkeli?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/hkl/en/Tickets/Ticket+fares+for+Helsinki+local+transport

2009: 6 EUR for adults - 3 EUR for children

Hmmm, I wonder if that also means bus drivers, or if they can still be purchased on the bus?

In case not, does anyone know if there are ticket machines at the cruise terminal on the Munkkisaari Quay of West Harbor (where we'll get the #16 bus)?

The bus drivers still sell tickets. Only in the trams you need to see the machine.

That's the new rule in Helsinki since January 2009.

Does anyone know the name of the #16 bus stop closest to LHC west harbor? I was trying to print out a trip planner and the site asked for start and stop locations. I know the destination "Market Square" works, but I do not know what to call the stop closest to the pier.

Hernesaaren laituri

I thought I read somewhere it was 7 Euros for Adults, and no dollars, no credit cards, no debit cards, "so if you don't have enough money you might just walk." "There are NO ATM machines around to get the right currency."

Can someone confirm?

That's the new rule in Helsinki since January 2009.

I was in fact the special discount tram ticket that was no longer sold in the trams. As far as i know the one day ticket is still sold by the tram driver.

2010 prices are: 6.80 Euro adult, 3.40 children 7-16.

From Helsinki Regional Transport web page:

"On buses and trams, you can pay the driver with cash. It is not possible to pay with debit or credit cards. On commuter trains debit and credit cards can be used.

Please try to avoid paying with large bills as the driver/conductor may not have enough change. Drivers do not have to accept bills larger than EUR 20. A maximum of 50 coins should be used per payment.

All sales points and ticket machines accept cash.

At HSL service point at the Central Railway Station you can pay with both debit cards and most common credit cards.

Also ticket machines selling multiple tickets accept debit and credit cards."

The entrance to HSL service point near the Central Railway Station looks like this: Down the escalator and immediately to the right.

Is that actually the first stop on Line 16(furthest south) and the last stop when returning from Market Square? If so, that will make it easy knowing where to get off when returning to the ship.

Also is Market Square the last stop for bus 16?

If I am understanding this right then the 1 day tourist ticket purchased on the bus in cash(6.8 E) from the driver is an easy way to take care of the day's transportation cost. Am I correct that from Market Square we can get the ferry to Soumelinia and tram3?

Thank so much Ultima Thule for letting me know if I have my facts straight.

Yes, harbour (and city) ends there.

No, bus goes on for another five miles but there should not be any problem. Bus stop name for the Market Square is "Kauppatori" but you just have to remember: - go off after having gone past a 400 yard long park (Espanade Park) on your left side. Even if you miss that then the next stop is the Senate Square and the Cathedral (stop name: Senaatintori). and that is unmistakable. You can as well go off there, as the distance to market from both stops are about equal.

Also note that bus returns on another route. Bus is arriving from ship on the south side of Esplanade park but will be returning on the north side so you have to look for the bus stop there.

I will be taking Bus 16 from the LHC Dock in September and need to know what stop I get off of that bus to catch the 3t and 3B trams. Does the bus stop at the Central Station?

Thank you so much. Barbara

Bus #16 does not stop near railway station.

There are five possibilities:

Stop name: Tehtaanpuisto

Just after passing Mikael Agricola Church with a high sharp tower. Tram stop is a bit forward across the corner.

http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Helsinki_Mikael_Agricola_church.jpg

Stop name: Kapteeninkatu

Tram and bus following same street. Stops should be not far to each other.

Stop name: Erottaja

Swedish theatre, start of Esplanade park. Follow tram lines one block north or west from corner to reach a tram stop.

Stop name: Kauppatori

Market Square. Tram across the street.

Stop name: Senaatintori

Senate Square and Chatedral. Tram stop half a block away across the square

Thank you so much- I like getting the "yes" answers, as it gives me confidence. Regarding the "no" answer, I think I will locate the return bus stop on the north side of Esplanade as soon as I get off at Kauppatori, so I won't have to worry at the end of the day in locating it.

One other question, is it also possible from LHC to walk on Skeppsgatan to Laivakatu to catch Bus 16 near intersection of Hernesaarenranta, which would be further north than the first stop at hernesaaren laituri? Would this take about the same time to walk there as to hernesaaren laituri?

Should not be hard to find but you have to walk one street back. Looks like this.

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=60.16781,24.949002&spn=0,359.995877&z=19&layer=c&cbll=60.16781,24.949002&panoid=prCvpWZvG1lUSPTTyf9lZQ&cbp=12,55,,0,5

Ok, first, all the streets have both Finnish and Swedish names , the Finnish one usually ending with "katu", the Swedish one usually with "gatan". So Skeppsgatan and Laivakatu happens to be the same street (= Ship Street).

If I understand your question correctly you want to walk north along the quay and exit via Laivakatu rather than exit on the south end to Hernesaaren laituri? I don't think thats even possible. as the former is the LHB quay exit while LHC quay is further south. I think a huge building is separating the two quays from each other so you'll have no choise.

Thanks again. I will stick with the first plan using hernesaaren laituri--

Also-thanks for the little language lesson regarding "gatan" and "katu."

All of us on CC are so fortunate to have your "insider" tips.
