New York Laguardia to Manhattan

Can anyone give me some advice on ground transportation from Lauguardia airport to Manhattan. We have not decided on a hotel yet, but will most likely be midtown area. There will be two adults and four large bags. Arrival time will be early afternoon on a Thursday.

either a yellow cab(about 30-35) to midtown Manhattan-there will be plenty on line at the airport to take you or have a car service meet you for the same price(about some are more check first)...

 

alternative is airlink or supershuttle(van services)...cost are about the same for two people.

I am a total newbie as far as NYC is concerned.

 

In your personal experience, would the taxi or private care be better as far as just getting a straight shot to the hotel w/o stopping at other places first?

 

Also, we wil be going to Red Hook Princess Terminal on Saturday afternoon. I read somewhere on CC that some of the taxi drivers in NY say they do not know where the Red Hook Princess terminal is. Do you have any info on that? We are exploring just getting a van or SUV from the hotel to the cruise terminal, becasue we will meet up with friends at the hotel and there will be four of us and LOTS of luggage from hotel to pier.

Agree with smyer on cab or car service. Car service (I use Dial 7 #212-777-7777) is nicer and cleaner than a cab and only a few dollars more.

 

Don't let them try and upgrade you to a luxury car because most all cars are Lincoln Continentals.

a mini van cab from Manhattan will easily take 4 plus luggage. On a Saturday am it will be an easy ride just have the directions with you(its take the brooklyn Battery tunnel to Brooklyn and take the Hamilton Avnue exit just past the tolls(4.15 with ezpass) make two quick lefts(yes you just made a U turn follow the signs you can't miss it. from Midtown a cab will be$30 or so including tip and toll....

one more point or a couple maybe. NY City is very easy to get around in. there is the fast and efficient(although sometimes crowded) subway. there are buses and there are yellow taxicabs everywhere. they cost less than most other cities are happy to take you in Manhattan and not so happy to take you to Brooklyn(which they are legally required to do). there are 11000 cabs. the number is strictly controlled. they are the only cars that can legally pick up a street hail. You can make arrangements with a car service by calling and having them meet you. Cabs can't technically do that. The medallion on the cab costs $400,000 to buy one. They want to work where its busiest-which is Manhattan. That's why cab drivers are sometimes less than happy about Brooklyn

 

Manhattan has a lot to see. I always recommend seeing the Metropolitan Museum of Art(for among other things the Egyptian collection). Although the entry fee is expensive you can actually give what you want and not the suggested amount.

I would also like suggestions for going directly from LGA to the Hudson Cruise Terminal for 4 people on June 11 and approximately what the cost should be either by cab or private car service?

Our plane arrives at 12:35 but the cruise doesn't leave until later in the afternoon...so time should not be a factor. Thanks!....

just go outside the terminal and catch a yellow cab-they will be lined up and a dispatcher will be there too. It takes about a half hour once you are in the cab and should run $about 30-35 including tip- the correct way is over the 59th street bridge(no toll yet---tolling the East river bridges is under consideration)....given the time it takes you to get your luggage it means getting to the pier around 2. This is cutting awfully close as most cruise lines require you check in two hours before the ship sails.

 

Car services using a regular size car should be ABOUT the same(some charge much more be careful on who you pick)

Wow that is expensive! I don't think I've ever paid more than $40-$45 with tax and tolls and it is usually closer to $30 from LGA to Midtown.

Does that Dial 7 service pick up from other places besides the airport? Like from the hotel?

(We will need transportation from the Marriott near LGA to the pier.)

With advanced notice or reservation, Dial 7 and other licensed car service (by TLC in N.Y.C.) will schedule your pickup from hotel & take you to the airport or cruise terminals - when calling & confirming with the dispatcher, always verify the quoted price & what's included/not included - i.e. tolls for bridge/tunnels (EZ-Pass is commonly used) - shop around & compare prices. Taxis often avoid going to Brooklyn & many hate going to Newark Airport or the Bayonne pier terminal (or they will charge you a round-trip plus tolls) - where as car service do not, what they quote & confirm is what you paid and no surprises with your luggage locked in their trunk upon arrival.

really? Taxis do NOT have to take you to the cruise terminal in Bayonne and if they do they can charge you anything they want. the rule for Bayonne is if they want to take you you and they have to agree to a fixed fee. Its .40 per 60 seconds while Idling which is $24.00 per hour. There hasn't been an increase in yellow taxi rates in 2 1/2 years. None is planned. Taxis do try to avoid going to Brooklyn but the rule is they have to take you anyplace in NY City and to Newark airport. Inside NYCity its meter plus tolls and tips-one way toll the only exception is that to Staten Island you have to pay round trip tolls(this is a stupid rule as the toll on the V-N Bridge is only collected one way- going to Staten Island anyway). To EWR the rule is meter plus $15.00 plus round trip tolls and tip.

Its true that the companies have seen a drop in corporate accounts(with many of the people being told to take cabs which generally are much cheaper or to take a train back to the suburbs and then a local cab) but most car services have raised some basic fares. Local car services are still generally(but not always) much cheaper than most of the larger car services.

Most of the time when you are going to the Brooklyn Cruise terminal and have the directions they-taxis- will be happy to go(they know how to get a fare by going back through Brooklyn Heights)...more or less. The Black car people are just as unhappy going to Brooklyn.

Finally Avis has a full service location at Atlantic Avenue and Court Street about a mile from the Cruise terminal.

Looked up the fare on Dial 7 for 4 people plus luggage.. quoted $50 from LGA to the Waldorf plus tolls, gratuity, waiting time, and additional stops. How much extra would this be? Is there a cheaper way to do this (fitting four ppl plus big bags may not work in a regular taxi)?

Car service (with crappy cars) on the island want $60 to $75 +t/t to take me from home to Manhattan.:eek:

For a buck more (or $14 less depending on how you want to look at it),

I can get a really nice car with carmellimo.:)

Yellow cabs in the city are $2.50 to start and .40 per 1/4 mile.

I noticed it the other day so I have an idea of how much it will cost

me to go from 46th & Broadway to the pier at 57th & 12th.:D
