How early to use Starwood points for Sheraton stay

How far in advance are you generally reserving to get a Sheraton room with Starwood points? Thinking of using some for San Juan, PR in February. TIA!

Book it now-peak season in PR, especially if you are traveling President's Day week. May not be any availability even today.

If there are standard rooms available for purchase, then you can redeem your Starpoints. Only if the hotel is sold-out of standard rooms will you be turned down.

This is good, in that you don't have black-out and capacity controls. The bad news is that you are still subject to the hotel selling out on popular days.

Also, be sure to look into the Cash & Points option -- it is often a better deal than all points or all dollars when it is offered (not all hotels/dates).

Thanks for all the comments. I guess I'm too late on the OSJ Sheraton. But only got the card last week, so it was never an option. Going to see when the Convention Ctr hotel near the Pan American dock opens. That might work out well. Thanks again!
