MikeBayAreaCa Posted March 28, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Are there things to do/see at this port other than the tours?
Budget Queen Posted March 28, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2009 The immediate Port area is the cannery based. Small museum, nice loop walk along the coast and back through the woods. Getting out of this area, you can walk into Hoonah. Not much in "town" but the walk is scenic, good local food.
MercedMike Posted March 28, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 28, 2009 The old cannery exhibits at the pier are very nice, and there are nature trails and a beach you can explore. As BQ says the road into Hoonah is scenic and pretty and walkable if you are in fit condition. There are frequently eagles in the trees. The Office Bar is a fun local place that serves great local crab and local beer (and not much else). However, we really enjoyed our bear search with Keith of Teckk Tours. This is sort of a unique experience and we thoroughly recommend it. Check out our review and pics at http://www.elite.net/~thehalls/volendam.html Have a GREAT cruise! countrygal52 Posted March 28, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 28, 2009 One of the best spots for a whale watch!! Several private operators - we went with Floyd of FISHES. One of the higlights of OUR trip!! Lunch at "The Office" for fresh crab and local beer:D!
lovetocruise99 Posted March 28, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Icy Strait Point was our favorite port and it's by far the best place to whale watch. It's also fun to walk around the little village area. Here are some pictures of it: http://familytravelfun.com/icy-strait-point-alaska.html
