There is no passenger train station at the Southampton Cruise Terminals.

You have to take a taxi from the cruise terminal to either the bus or train station. This costs about 6/8 GBP depending on which cruise terminal.

 

Unless your hotel is by Paddington Station you'll probably do better by getting the direct trains from Southampton to London Waterloo, then onto your hotel. If you were going to Paddington to get the Heathrow Express train to Heathrow, there is no need, there are hourly coaches from Southampton direct to Heathrow.

 

If you simply must go to Paddington by rail it means changing trains at Reading using relatively infrequent trains between Southampton and Reading, then switching to another train to Paddington.

 

I guess stating your end destination is the missing parameter that would enable a worthwhile answer here

We are staying at the Crown Paddington Hotel before our cruise and plan to take the megatrain from Waterloo Station to Southampton on Aug. 24th. It takes about 90 minutes and if you buy your tickets well in advance they are very affordable. The tube ride from Waterloo to Paddington does require one transfer but unless you have a lot of luggage should not be a problem.

No it doesn't. The Bakerloo Line (coloured brown on the tube map) runs from Waterloo straight to Paddington.

Taking the Northern Line or Jubilee Line requires a change, but the Bakerloo Line doesn't.

Thanks, everyone for the info. We will be taking the train from Southampton to Waterloo then transfering to the Tube via the bakerloo line. Does anyone know how much it is for the tube trip to paddington from waterloo station and also how much is the train ride from southampton to waterloo for 2 adults? We are staying at the Hyde Park Radnor, which is near Paddington Sta. before flying home to Texas USA. Is the Travelpass worth it for a 3 day trip??

There is an excellent journey planner on the Transport for London website at www.tfl.gov.uk. Bakerloo Line trains are very frequent (every three or four minutes) and the journey takes 15 minutes. A one-way Tube fare within Central London (Zones One & Two) costs GBP 4.00.

 

If you are staying in London for a few days, it might be cost effective to purchase an Off-peak or Anytime Travelcard. As the name suggests, you can use an Anytime card for unlimited bus, tube and train travel at any time within the Zones that you have specified. Off-peak Travelcards (which are cheaper than the Anytime version) are valid after 9:30 am on weekdays - and at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For instance, the price of a one-day off-peak Travelcard for Zones One & Two is GBP 5.60, which is less than the cost of two tube tickets. Incidentally, long-distance train fares in the UK are outrageously expensive, particularly if you need to buy your tickets at the station on the day of travel. If you are prepared to forgo flexibility (which involves travel on a specified train), it is usually cheaper to buy an advance purchase ticket. The farther ahead you purchase your ticket, the cheaper it will be. You can check schedules and prices and purchase tickets at www.thetrainline.com/default.asp. If you purchase tickets on-line, you can collect them from the ticket office or from self-service machines at major stations. For some routes, you can even print your own tickets on-line.

 

On a few routes, you can also book tickets on a low-fare "Megatrain" service (www.megatrain.com/uk).

Your info has been a big help to us. Thanks also for the links to the web pages. I have been on the trainline website many times along with many others. I have never heard of the "megatrain" though.

 

We are looking to share a cab ride with another couple in the Azores for a few hrs. For a private tour of the main sites/island without the ships tours. Is there anyone that is looking for the same? We will be at the Meet & Greet on the 13th. We are looking forward to making new friends and meeting new people.

It is actually possible to do the whole trip by [mainline] train, by taking the hourly [CrossCounty] train from Southampton to Reading, transferring at Reading to the [First Great Western] train into London Paddington. Total trip time is 90 minutes, including a 13 minute change of trains at Reading. Probably both faster and easier than negotiating the tube across London.

Southampton (not South Hampton) is easily accessible by direct train from London Waterloo station (3x/hour, 1h30m) or London Victoria (1x/hour, 2h30m). You can also take a train from London Victoria to Clapham Junction, change trains and go to Southampton from there

 

Also, coaches run from Victoria Coach station to Southampton Coach station.

 

Both the Southampton Central train station and Southampton Coach station are close to the cruise terminal (GBP 5 cab ride)

There are no buses or coaches from the port. Consequently, you would need to travel by taxi to the Coach Station at Harbour Parade, Southampton (Cost GBP 5 to GBP 8, depending upon the cruise terminal).

 

A direct coach service to London, Heathrow Airport runs every 60 minutes and takes between 1h:35m and 2h:05m (depending upon the time of day). The coaches are operated by National Express and I advise advance reservation at http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/index.cfm.

Train services in the UK are operated by various franchises. Southwest Trains operate the fastest and most frequent service from London Waterloo to Southampton. It is also the most expensive.

 

Southern Railway operates via a different route from London Victoria to Southampton. It is a slower journey and the trains stop at more stations. However, you stand a better chance of getting a really cheap advance purchase fare via www.thetrainline.com/default.asp (cheap fares do not become available until around 60 days prior to travel). If you are staying close to Victoria, I would use that route.

 

Then, you will need to take a taxi from Southampton station to the cruise terminal.

Even better - you can buy an Advance Purchase Single ticket costing GBP5, subject to availability. When I checked the Trainline website today, I could have purchased a £5 one way ticket to travel from London Victoria to Southampton Central on any day between April 2nd and May 5th (direct trains only). You probably need to check the Internet regularly, because the operator might not release the cheapest tickets more than four or five weeks in advance of the travel date.

A Megatrain ticket is only valid for that particular service - so if you miss the train, you will have to purchase a new (and very expensive) ticket to travel on an alternative service, operated by South West Trains.

 

I doubt whether your Megatrain will be ready for boarding more than 15 minutes prior to its scheduled departure time. However, Waterloo is a very large and very busy station. Consequently, you should allow sufficient time to travel to the station - and to find the correct platform.

The trains between London and Southampton are fundamentally commuter trains, with no particularly special provision for luggage. So the watchword is "improvise". As you are not travelling during weekday peak hours, it should not be too difficult. There is some space between seat backs (there are some seats that are back-to-back to each other). Or else put the bags on the floor between empty seats, or somewhere in the aisles if it's reasonably out of the way and not blocking access routes.

On the Waterloo to Southampton route, the Megatrain tickets are for trains operated by South West Trains. There should be a specific Megatrain carriage on the train. If you miss the train, it will simply be a question of buying an ordinary South West Trains ticket - as there are no other advance purchase fares on this route, this is not particularly expensive as all the non-Megatrain fares are walk-up fares.

 

I have said this before, but personally I think that the flexibility of not having to make sure that I get to a specific Megatrain service (given the very good normal frequency of South West Trains compared to the very limited number of Megatrain services - and the faster trains that are not offered by Megatrain) makes it better value to buy the normal walk-up South West Trains tickets. But everyone will have their own priorities.
