Weather in late May?

When we were there ten years ago in late May and early June, weather was cool (although we did actually have snow flurries while we were in Denali) and the Portage Glacier facility was not yet cleared of the winter's snow accumulation. Onboard the ship it was chilly when we were in Glacier Bay but warmed up a bit when the sun broke through. Only in Ketchikan did we encounter any rain and even then it was more a series of light showers than any kind of downpour. On the rest of our trip, we found the temperatures to be not dissimilar from what our friends and family were experiencing back home in Boston. It really is a crapshoot and the advice to dress in layers is excellent and well worth heeding. We will be back in Alaska on a cruise tour in June, 2010 and already anxiously awaiting it.:)

I had one coworker who visited Alaska the last week of May last year. She had beautiful warm sunny weather. Another coworker left a week after she returned. He had cold wet weather and told us they were sholving snow off of the ship's deck.

We've done the exact cruise you're on for the past 2 years. In 2007 we went the last week in May and in 2008 we went the week before. In both cases, we loved it. We had mostly sunny, cool weather with snow on the mountains and trails. There were a couple of cold, drizzly days, but even those were fine with us -- since we're from Hawaii, the colder and snowier it is the better we like it! :) In fact, we like Alaska in May so much that we'll be back again this year.

I do have to say, however, that we wouldn't go any earlier than mid-May. We had relatives go on May 10th last year and they experienced snow on the deck while in Skagway. While that's not a bad thing for people who usually never get to experience a snowfall, they admitted that it was a bit too cold for them.:D

Nobody knows what the weather will be like, so be prepared for anything. Late May (asnd early June) is usually the driest part of the cruise season so that's when I usually go. You can see the historic and current weather for all Alaska ports on one page at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/cruise-weather.html

Now don't forget you've promised me warm and sunny at that time this year!;)
