AlanFromFL Posted April 10, 2009 #26 Share Posted April 10, 2009 We've sailed in a 5-A cabin and had two portholes, I do not believe they could have been opened with anything other than a wrench and/or prybar. What I did find useful, however, was that there was a rather large empty space between the actual portholes and the cabin wall/window curtain, due to the angle of the hull and the square shape of the cabin that far forward. But this space was a perfect place to store and dry our wet dive gear. So if you don't mind a little noise in the mornings (from the bow thrusters, I presume), it really wasn't all that bad. dan40 Posted April 10, 2009 #28 Share Posted April 10, 2009 We were supposed to be sailing from the Panama Canal north to Mexico ports and then LA. Instead we were going FULL SPEED, due west, out into the Pacific to avoid a Pacific hurricane. The PA announced that the crew would be entering the porthole cabins and battening down the steel covers over the portholes. We were on the elevator and a woman [from Florida] got on by the casino so she probably couldn't hear the announcement. My wife asked her, "Which deck?" to push the button for her. She said, "Riviera deck." I asked if she had heard the announcement? "No, Why?" she asked. "They just announced that they are boarding up the windows down there." She almost fainted.:D Dan
DGP1111 Posted April 11, 2009 #29 Share Posted April 11, 2009 Portholes are circular What you see here, is an Ocean View window and they're sealed tight, with a rubber gasket between you and the wet stuff... . . And I'm betting the couple in this video are glad that's the case!!!
FlaKrznNubie Posted April 11, 2009 #30 Share Posted April 11, 2009 If there is rough seas is it possible that some water can come into the cabin if the porthole window is open? Actually, rooms with portholes do not have showers so this is how you must shower each day. Finally one that get the question! guess some people are trying to be really funny, but I was just asking a valid question. Yes I have more than a dozen cruises under my belt and I have never stayed in one of those 1-A cabins and each time I see a pic of one of those cabins I see an open window, and it looked strange to me if they were indeed open. I wasn't asking about the oceanview cabins-because I know you can't open them- but the portholes in particular! You gotta believe we're skeptical you have never read a thread about this before. You have been a member for a year with 1500+ posts. Just seems odd.

Aplmac Posted April 11, 2009 #35 Share Posted April 11, 2009 .OV windows are sealed with gaskets. And I'm betting the couple in this video are glad that's the case!!! Now I'm really glad my porthole -down low near the waterline- can open. Ah.. to get some fresh air and the smell of sea breeze! Maybe even a fish or two, as well! __________________________________ You open your porthole. Great idea. Air the cabin out...that's riiiight. You go up to breakfast -you'll be back in an hour, no more. "Leave the darned thing OPEN honey, let the cabin air a bit, huh? Nothing's gonna happen!" . dan40 Posted April 11, 2009 #37 Share Posted April 11, 2009 Wonder if i can bring my boat rod and do some trolling from the balcony? Do you really want to catch a fish that eats while maintaining a steady swimming speed above 20 mph? And once you have a fish on, the "boat" will not maneuver to help you land your fish. A "fish conference" at the aft bar sounds like a better alternative. Dan
Aplmac Posted April 11, 2009 #38 Share Posted April 11, 2009 Wonder if i can bring my boat rod and do some trolling from the balcony? Skip-baits work well at around 15 kts. for Sailfish! ;) .
