No one is going to criticize you for dressing formally.

Golly Gee... I hope not, Lets remember IT'S FORMAL NIGHT!!!

Not me but Widipedia states:

Formal dress (UK) and formal wear (U.S.) are the general terms for clothing suitable for formal social events, such as a wedding, formal garden party or dinner, débutante cotillion, dance, or race. The Western style of formal evening dress, characterised by black and white garments, has spread through many countries; it is almost always the standard formal social dress in countries without a formal national costume.

YES! I HAVE the SOLUTION!

The British were right all along! Lets go back the the class system. You know 1st class passengers, 2nd, 3rd etc all the way down to steerage!

Down there, below the waterling, you can dress anyway you want!

I still can't believe that you would walk onto the ship, look around in wonder at the magnificent beauty of the atrium and public rooms then disrespect the crew who sails her, to say nothing of your fellow passengers in is such a cavalier and intentional manner.

The class system would most certainly work! The ones that want some class can have it and the hicks can go in steerage.

God Save the Queen!

I certainly hope the fare is adjusted accordingly. One can only hope it includes a tour of the engine room :D;)

We had decided not go go formal on 1 of our cruises and told our servers the night before that we would not be there on formal night. They insisted we come and enjoy the lobster, etc. I really didn't want to go because I thought I would be uncomfortable, but hubby insisted. He wore and nice long sleeve dress shirt and slacks and I wore a black travel outfit and as it turned out there were quite a few people dressed as we were. So in the future, I will dress formal for the captain's cocktail party and he will wear his suit and the other 2 formal nights we will wear dressy casual outfits. That way we don't have to pack as many outfits. I don't think people dress as formal as they did 10-15 years ago.

One outfit should do for all formal nights. The only people who will see you in an outfit more than once will be at your table, and they'll probably be doing the same thing. Nancy

For what it's worth, I was very recently on the Star and dining in the Amalfi DR (Anytime dining). Every night they had a sign displayed outside the entrance, advising of the dress code. On the Smart Casual nights the sign indicated "Smart Casual Dress" followed by something like "no shorts, t-shirts or bathing attire, please". On the Formal Nights the sign indicated "Formal Dress" followed by the same "no shorts, t-shirts or bathing attire, please".

No one is going to criticize you for dressing formally. It's your choice, but just don't expect everyone in the crowd to follow your lead. That's what makes Princess so nice to travel on- everyone gets to decide just how formal they want to dress on the formal nights.

I know I wouldn't criticize him for dressing formally. Being obnoxious? That's another story.

No one's talking about dressing in cut offs and bikini's and disrespecting the crew. So far, anyone asking about this have described dressing very nicely...just not "formally". Some people are just not "formal" people, or for whatever reason choose not to. Perhaps, wilfros, you can let your server know the standards people have to meet before you'll share a table with them. Good grief!

I'm looking so forward to my first cruise with my husband. I pray to God we don't run into many snotty and obnoxious people. We are a friendly couple and like to enjoy ourselves and would never dream of looking at other people and being critical of how they dress. After reading some of these threads trying to gather information for our vacation, and reading some of the downright MEAN comments people make, I hope that this is common on all the boards and not just the Princess boards, and that we chose the right cruise line!

As soon as someone says they want to dress less formally so they can enjoy the better food on formal night the formalists get all uptight & proceed to expound about how the slobs ruin the atmosphere for all those dressed properly. It's sad that some people let it deter from their overall enjoyment.

Most of the bickering is on this board & not on any ship I've been on. (or at least it's not something said out loud).

Doesn't this go both ways?

I don't think so.....It doesn't bother me in the slightest now formal people want to dress. If they like being in a suit & tie or tux, fine, so be it. I won't hold it against them. It's their vacation & they should dress as they please. :p

I have been in bed for a number of months (recovering from Cancer surgery) and have had time to read (more than maybe I should have) these blog entries.

If I came off as obnoxious, I am sorry.

There are just so darn many people who espouse the non-conventional, non-traditional, me first attitudes, that something kind of snapped today. I could not, in fact, care less what everyone else wears. I will be formal and I intend to enjoy myself. I hope everyone else enjoys themselves also.

There are just so may people talking about how they are not going formal that I though I would bring up the other side. In order to do that, especially here on CC, you have to be ready to defend your position.

If that came off as obnoxious, and I can see who it may have, then again, I am sorry. From all I can tell, from the Roll Call posts especially, everyone seems to be great.

I intend to have a great cruise and I wish you the same. I hope someday to have the pleasure of dining with you and you husband, my wife and I are both fun loving and friendly people also. This too is going to be our first cruise (in about 30 years) and everything is new to us as well.

Happy Sailing!!

Congratulations on beating cancer! I hope you have an absolute blast!

No apologies..I am sorry if I came across rude or disrespectful. It is often easy to misunderstand tone over the internet as well. I should know better. I was just telling my hubby about this thread and he told me I had too much time on my hands. :))

In response to something you said in the other thread, about responding to society in general today....I really could not agree more. It's a "me me me" world out there and it really is sad.

Have fun!

Thanks for being understanding.

We lost a daughter to the streets (not dead but heavy into drugs) and we are now raising our Grandchild as a result. Being involved in her adventure into the dark side of life I have seen far too much of the "all for me" attitude. This may have swayed my comments.

I just couldn't imagine, MYSELF, being out with my wife on a formal evening and not wanting to get all decked out and enjoying the evening to its fullest! Nowadays we only seem to see this in the movies and I, for one, want very much to experience it with her. As one person said to me on another post, "to experience the James Bond feeling when I walk into the casino". Where else can you get that opportunity?

Anyway, thanks for your post. And ENJOY your cruise.

The people here are truely great and as a result I am preparing a blog to answer all the questions I have come upon during my months leading up to our cruise. Kind of a thankyou for all the information they have provided to me.

It is far from completed (I haven't been on the cruise yet) but if you want to see it as it is right now you are welcome to visit it at:

http://www.stamperspad.com/caribbean_princess/

The deckplan takes some time to download and not all photos are up yet, but it is helping people get to know the ship a bit better.

Once we sail and return, I will be completing it with pano photos, 3D photos and 360 photos. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear from you. :)
