Bahasa Indonesia and Tagalog

Old As Dirt Mom

Recommended Posts

I've lost my lists! I had lists of common words/phrases in Bahasa Indonesia and Tagalog, the lingua franca of Indonesia and the Philippines which I had put together from previous threads here on the HAL board.

Why do I need to know any Bahasa Indonesia and Tagalog? Most of the ship's crew onboard the HAL fleet hail from those two countries, and they seem to enjoy it when passengers make the attempt to speak to them in their own languages. So if anyone with knowledge has the time, patience, or inclination, could you please post a few words of either Indonesian or Tagalog, and their translations, if you wouldn't mind, so I can refresh my ailing memory?

Thank you!

Terimah Kassih! (Indonesia)

Salamat! (Philippines)

Dank u! (Holland)

For Indonesia, try http://www.learningindonesian.com

The first few lessons are greetings common phrases. I used them before my last cruise (listened in my van on the way south) and picked up quite a bit.

Thanks, Rich and Copper John! I was hoping that John would post his wonderful word list, and he did! I will print it pronto! There are a couple phrases in there that I don't think I will try out, like "Angkat Tanean", or "hands up"!

Anyone have anything to add, in either Indonesian or Tagalog? I admit, I'm being very lazy here and making someone else do my work for me:o

Do you speak either of these languages, John?

I know you speak Dutch but wonder re: Tagalog and Indonesian.

Great word list. Thanks for it.

Morning, S7S. No, I don't speak those languages. What I do on the ships is to ask the guys and girls how to say a particular phrase in their language and to please write it down for me (the simple stuff). I then try to memorize it and use it (on them) and they have a lot of fun with me (especially with the 'Saya tidak gila hari ini';)). The 'hands up' and the 'saya polisi' came up when they found out I was a cop;)

Thanks, Copper. That's great, of course.

Congratulations to your colleagues 'cross country here in Boston in making an important arrest this morning. That is a truly bad guy we're happy to see 'off the streets'. Very frightening! They didn't waste a minute getting him. Well done!
