Another passenger missing off of a Carnival Ship

The Pride is in Drydock right now, wasn't that the last cruise that this occurred on? I wonder if there are FBI agents combing that ship for clues.

I did not hear anything about them finding her blood anywhere. I feel for the whole family, and the poor husband that stayed behind, I wonder if he feels guilty that he didn't go. Has to be tough. I doubt it was a suicide, you would think that she would have left a letter behind, many women tend to do that if they kill themselves. Why would she pull such a stunt when cruising with her daughters and parents? It would be easier to down a bunch of pills than throw yourself off of a ship. According to the family, there wasn't a reason for her to commit suicide.

Now, I read about another woman within the last month who lost a bunch of money in the casino, and then killed herself by jumping off of the ship. I think that may have been a Carnival ship as well.

It's true, it seems that most of the time that you hear about a person overboard, it happens on Carnival. I wonder why, true, there are a lot more balcony cabins on their ships, but not everyone throws themselves off of the balcony of their cabin.

I was reading something on a website that reports incidents that have happened on cruise-lines. Carnival takes the cake with overboard incidents, and it seems like Royal Caribbean has the most sexual assaults ( mostly by crew members on passengers).

I just know that if I were ever in a predicament where somebody was trying to throw me overboard, I would fight, scratch, scream, whatever I had to do. If I were thrown overboard, I would leave my attacker so scratched up and bloody that he would not get away with attempting to murder, or murder me.

Hi Nednrom,

Cool, we had a great time on that cruise too, so sad that such a horriffic incident happened on the Pride, or really any ship for that matter.

Love the new Carnival ships, I haven't updated my list in a long time, but we'll be sailing on the Valor in February, and the Liberty in Europe in October.

Can't wait.

Sorry. I'm not so good with the little smileys. Just being a little sarcastic, but in a joking way. I'm not worried you gave the book away. I'll probably pick it up when I finish Basket Case.

The husband was on Good Morning America today. I believe the daughter was 14, and the lady was with her parents. The husband was very distraught, and said that his wife was afraid of the water. He also said there was no way she would have killed herself.

Ok,thanks. That makes more sense.I just kept wondering, why the daughter wasn't suspicious of her Mothers missing a little earlier.I mean, don't people usually get ready for dinner together.? I guess since it was late seating, maybe the daughter was in the AO,and the parents probably had their own room,so it was not until dinner, that they realized she was missing.

Poor thing.I know when I go out on deck,to wax nostalgic...And gaze into the deep, vast ocean. It is so surreal, how vast the Ocean is.

No telling what really happend. She could have just been tipsy, and spilled her purse. But how frightening that moment must have been when she realized she was going over...Very sad.

Do tell. We are into the single digit countdown as of today and this is something I have NOT heard, read, etc. Maybe I don't want to know. I HAVE to know if this is all adult related - - we are planning to leave two girls in the Adventure Ocean and I want to be assured they are above reproach!

I saw the Good Morning America story yesterday and, according the the stepfather, the daughter was 17 years old. They also talked about finding the woman's purse "near a lower deck railing." He didn't say anything about a stalker although he DID express his belief that foul play must have been involved. Seems like it's really a complete mystery until/unless some law enforcement agencies start giving more info.

Edited to add: If you go to http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/ today (Dec. 10), they've got a story about it.

Maybe someone else has, but I've never heard of anyone ever being sexually assaulted while in the care of the Adventure Ocean staff.

I don't think there is any way to guarantee that a given individual is "above reproach." Anyone assaulted by a trusted family member or beloved priest would probably have bet the farm that these individuals were harmless.

However, from many things I have read, most sexual assaults on cruise ships happen to adolescents and young adults who are wandering the ship alone late at night or who go into a stranger's cabin thinking they are just going to "hang out" or party a little. As long as your kids stay at Adventure Ocean or are under your direct supervision, they are likely to be very, very safe.

I think you gave a very accurate assessment of the situation. It seldom happens but a little common sense guidance on the part of the parents would pretty much eliminate the problem. There seems to be crew involved when it happens.

I have never heard of a problem when in Adventure Ocean. I feel very safe when my grandkids go with us.

Think safe and guide accordingly....

TODAY, FROM MY LOCAL TV NEWS STATION, WTNH.COM:

Meriden man disappears on cruise

(Meriden-WTNH Dec. 9, 2004 9:56 PM) _ A Meriden family is renewing their plea for help finding their son. He vanished while taking a cruise and his story is not the only mysterious disappearance.

By News Channel 8's Michael Herzenberg

It may be unusual for someone to vanish off a cruise ship, but recently there have been two more cases of it happening.

The Scavones of Meriden want the public to know that when you are in international waters you are no longer under U.S. jurisdiction. They say it can complicate an investigation into a loss, which they don't want any family to have to deal with.

The holidays are a time for families to celebrate together, but for the Scavones of Meriden that can't happen.

"The first Christmas John, I, and Joey, this is where we sat. We couldn't even go in the living room where we all were for 22 years with Jimmy," says Jean Scavone.

John and Jean Scavone's youngest son Jimmy is missing. He disappeared off a Carnival Cruise Ship in 1999 just after graduating from Western CT State University.

"In my mind, missing my son, sometimes I cried. Just him not being there, it's like part of you has died," says John.

"The last thing I said to him is 'Jimmy take care of yourself and be careful' and he laughed and said 'Mom I'm going on a cruise' and I said 'I know but you're going to be in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean,'" said Jean.

The Scavones are not alone in their pain. Two similar cases made them want to talk.

A 54-year-old man appears to have vanished in the Atlantic Ocean in November off a Carnival Cruise ship, and the FBI is investigating a 37-year-old woman's disappearance off a Carnival Cruise this month in the Pacific.

Serious, bad things can happen, even on a cruise. And on a cruise you really don't have any authority because you're in international waters.

The Scavones say the FBI had extra hurdles to overcome because the ship was in international waters, but concluded the 22-year-old must have just fallen overboard.

"It was like no one saw them, no one saw it happen. How does somebody fall off a cruise ship and nobody see anything, no one hears somebody cry as they fall? It doesn't make any sense." says Jean.

Now, on the this Christmas, more than 5 years later, the Scavones say they are looking for a miracle.

"I pray for a miracle, I pray that somebody knows what happened to my son." says John.
