1st Time in New Orleans

You are closer than someone staying in the quarter.

The cruise ship Terminal is by the Riverside Hilton and the RiverWalk (a mall) the convention center is at the other end of the Mall. The Marriot is across the street. You can walk it.

To be honest though I have never been on the cruise, I just know the area.

The closest hotel would have to be the Hilton Riverside but the Marriot and Doubletree as well as Harrah's (casino) are close as well.

NolaZach, thanks for your reply!

Sounds like the Marriot is a good choice, plus it got great reviews on TripAdvisor!

Thanks again.

The Residence Inn by Marriot is the closest to the pier, which is from Julia St.

In my opinion, it's a poor location area. Nothing "New Orleans" around it and the wrong side of town, if you are a "tourist" doing tourist stuff. It is a long walk to the Quarter, and the Riverside Streetcar, has a lot to be desired, and runs infrequently.

Very few food options as well. I go to NO several times/year, and know the area extensively. Just back a couple weeks ago from Jazzfest. IF you aren't a significant walker, then budget in cab fares. I am one who does do a lot of walking, going cheap. :)

We stayed at the Marriott Convention Center last October pre-cruise. Very nice hotel, no complaints. Although the touristy part was quite a walk, we did use the trolly cars. You can get a day pass for 5.00 on and off as much as you want for the day. Get a good schedule because they don't travel past a certain time to certain areas, thus leaving you to walk or taxi. I loved my stay in NO, especially the french quarter, lots of bargains to be bartered for!! This was my first time there and we managed to get our way around the trolly cars and walking to areas just fine. Really nice place to visit.

Would I stay there again pre-cruise, without a doubt. The mall is nice and you can walk to several things. I would not walk to the french quarter, too far for me.

If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them if I can.

I've made the walk before during carnival time, it is a long one from near the Highway(US90/Ponchatrain Expressway) to Bourbon. I do understand that, just the Marriot is closer than a quarter hotel to the boat. It depends what you plan on doing. I like the area by the hotel (Warehouse district) actually the two best clubs in the city are right down the block and that tall building on the river houses another on on the top floor. The three (Republic, Metropolitan and 360) are by far the most popular clubs in town, but I would still recomend Bourbon or even Frenchman to tourist before the Warehouse district because as the name implies everything is hidden around warehouses.
