Rev Bob Posted May 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2009 how are the black sand beaches?? Are they worth the hour drive from the ship? We have always wanted to see these beaches, but dont want to waste our little amount of time in one spot.

I have seen black sand beaches in the greek islands and personally wasn't that impressed because they get so hot you can't walk on them let alone lay on them. FLbeachbaby Posted May 17, 2009 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2009 We live in the area of the perpetually rated top 10 white sand beaches and I can tell you that the black sand beaches were breath taking. The Pacific blue water lapping onto the shiny, onyx black "sand" was stunning. But I'm a beach freak so....
daWoods Posted May 17, 2009 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2009 The one near Hana is well worth the drive. There's also much to see along the way, and beyond (Oheo Gulch).
chimerix Posted May 17, 2009 #6 Share Posted May 17, 2009 The black sand beaches are really beautiful! Well worth the time to go see them and wander a bit - BUT they are not so great for lounging around. If you want that kind of "day at the beach", you are better off going to see the black sand, but planning to lounge at a white beach.
nickidaveo Posted May 18, 2009 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2009 When in Hilo drive past the VNP about 15-20 miles allso had turtles on the beach
OCruisers Posted May 18, 2009 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2009 Please don't confuse the Black Sand beaches in Hawaii with the "so called" black sand beaches in the Caribbean which just look like dirty white sand. In Hawaii they are awesome! :)
auducky2 Posted May 22, 2009 #9 Share Posted May 22, 2009 We saw the one on the Road to Hana and we saw one on our tour in Hilo. They were beautiful! The black sand with the aqua water was breathtaking.
