how are the black sand beaches?? Are they worth the hour drive from the ship? We have always wanted to see these beaches, but dont want to waste our little amount of time in one spot.

I have seen black sand beaches in the greek islands and personally wasn't that impressed because they get so hot you can't walk on them let alone lay on them.

We live in the area of the perpetually rated top 10 white sand beaches and I can tell you that the black sand beaches were breath taking. The Pacific blue water lapping onto the shiny, onyx black "sand" was stunning. But I'm a beach freak so....

The black sand beaches are really beautiful! Well worth the time to go see them and wander a bit - BUT they are not so great for lounging around. If you want that kind of "day at the beach", you are better off going to see the black sand, but planning to lounge at a white beach.
