I am taking my first solo cruise in a few weeks. I was wondering for those of you who have traveled with others and solo what do you do differently when you cruise alone?

I wake up earlier to go to the gym, I nap more often and I also meet/talk to more "other" people.

On QM2, I took bridge lessons every morning, I don't think I would have done that if I was with someone else.

Well, I don't have to wait for someone else to get out of the bathroom. Also, I don't have to "negotiate" where to have dinner tonight, which excursion to take tomorrow, etc., etc.

Well, he loves tv...he's got it on all the time. When we're in the cabin, that damn tv is on (espn, cnn). So, when I cruise solo - the tv *never* gets turned on expect maybe on debarkation morning if I am killing time ;-)

I guess the other thing is no "romantic adult time" if you get my drift when I cruise solo. But, the no tv thing is worth it, lol!

You go girl! Took the words right out of my mouth. Also, I have no one hanging over my shoulder in the casino telling me I should leave. Nap, nap, nap. Shop, shop, shop....no dickering, bickering or DOGS! No schedule and for me, no dressing up for dinner. I always go to the buffet as food isn't the most important thing on my cruises. Just as long as I have my spaghetti and those delicious rolls, I'm set to go.

P.S. and no smacking me awake because I'm snoring!

Haha I've only been on one cruise, and even though I went with my sister...my sea days were "solo". We have VERY different personalities and she loves to lounge by the pool reading all day, but I like to sample all the different activities and meet new people. I'm always up and busy. My sister and I just met up for dinner :)

On my upcoming solo cruise (this time it really will be solo) I am looking forward to being able to do the excursions that I want to do. It's not such a big deal in the Caribbean to compromise on activities, but in Alaska there are so many things that I want to do that I am looking forward to taking in what I am interested in and not having to budge even a little. I figure my sea days will be exactly the same as on my last cruise LOL except instead of meeting my sister for dinner, I'll be meeting my tablemates.

Good question but I have always sailed on my own so I don't

do anything differently;):D

Oh wait, I cannot tell a lie. I have shared a cabin twice and

of course, you have to compromise on shower times and stuff.

Out of all the cruises listed in my signature all but these 2 were

solo. And I can tell you I will continue to go that way. Having

my own space is too important for me to give it up.

As for dressing up, I personally LOVE IT:) and enjoy being

served every night in the dining room.:D

I love getting to know my wait staff and never

have the opportunity to "dress to the 9s" here at home.

That would not change because of another person.

If they didn't want to eat in the dining room, that is their

choice, mine.

I still do ship sponsored excursions unless sailing to a port I have

been to before and know the area. Many times I will go out on

my own if I feel comfortable. But going off with a ship's tour gives

me comfort too. IF that tour happens to run late, the ship will wait

and its another nice way to meet other passengers too:)

There are many things that I did on my first solo that I really enjoyed.

1. Order room service when I wanted.

2. Take a nap after morning room service.

3. Take a long shower.

4. Meet new people-always fun!

5. Go to the show's on my time, not sit and wait for 45 minutes prior!

6. Take long walks on deck 5.

7. No dress up! Lido/Windjammer good enough for me.

The list could go on and on. It was a great time as that I only answered to myself. However, I did miss my DH after about 7 days!

I have my breakfast in a very, very, very, calm way...

I go to the cassino at night...

I drink Porto wine...

I try every type of cocktails...

I do crosswords...

I pay more attention to the sky...

I drink more beer...

I go to the shows...

I enjoy "my time". I decide when I get up. (Hunger dictates that) I eat when I want. (Again, hunger dictates that) I spend the entire sea day in the casino until...you guessed it...the hunger calls:D. Noones schedule but my stomach's. If he's happy then I am :)

I am taking my first solo cruise in a few weeks. I was wondering for those of you who have traveled with others and solo what do you do differently when you cruise alone?

I talk to strangers. :)

Seriously, I would go to the "singles get-together" which usually consisted of 4 or 5 people at one of the bars before dinner. That way you got to meet some other people. By the end of the cruise, I felt like I knew half the people on the ship.

I also noticed that many singles develop patterns, cruising past the same lounges and/or bars, looking for other people they've met earlier on the cruise.

Aside from "lovey-dovey" couples, meaning newlyweds and other romantic couples obviously interested only in each other (and nothing wrong with that), I found that many cruisers, both single & with partners, were easy to talk to and eager to make friends.

When I traveled with my GF, we tended to keep to ourselves a little more.

I have always gone cruising with DW, yet I always do most of the things people have posted. Why do you need to be alone in order to do what you want?

When I travel with someone else, I like to share a good part of my time with this person. Therefore, I don’t do all the things that I would like to do but it’s ok, I still have fun.

It’s different, that’s all.

Fancy meeting you here, Sue :p

For me, cruising solo means answering to no one! I only go to the main dining room if I feel like it, I actually get to read in peace, and I don't make real plans for the ports. I gamble to my heart's content, and I chat with whoever I want to. Cruising solo is totally relaxing and I love it!

Well, nowadays I have to cruise alone because my friends usualy don't have free time or even enough money to go on a cruise with me. So, there is one thing that I like very much to do when I am in my cabin, on my own: I take some DVD movies with me and I try to make good use of them!

You sound like me in all categories except I like to watch late movies in my cabin (after the gambling) and also order room service.

Rattling drawers all hrs of night looking for something . I can go on but Ill never go again in same room with someone other than my wife . Im used to her . Ill take others but theyll have their own rooms . I like no hastle traveling especilly on my CRUISE get away. This will be my 33rd cruise. My wife has been on 12 with me but her schedule as a Nurse dont only give her 4 weeks a year off so we like to do family outings with our kids and my wife knows how I really like my cruises and she can take or leve them so I go solo . Im getting excited as my Jan cruise is getting closer . Iv never felt alone on any cruise in fact just the oppisite . I feel comfortible on cruises as I have no wories and no phone calls . I can eat drink and gamble and have no wories . CARL

I agree. It was the best of both worlds when we cruised, each doing our own thing each enjoyed. He liked the art gallery, I liked to take pictures. He liked all the shows, I liked the casino. Of course we had time together, but each had our own freedoms too.
