Rough waters in Atlantic vs. Caribbean

We are thinking of taking the Zuiderdam from Ft. Lauderdale to the Panama Canal in December. Are we likely to encounter rougher water as we pass through the Southern Atlantic near Panama and Costa Rica than we would in the Caribbean?

We had very rough seas one time (February) going from FLL to the Panama Canal. When you go, they might be glass smooth. You just never can tell what seas may be like.

We took that route in Nov. Even though there was a hurricane going on, the water was like glass. You couldn't tell you were on a ship. Hope you have the same experience.
