lannp Posted June 9, 2009 #27 Share Posted June 9, 2009 I was on that crossing and found much to do everyday. Between the lectures, the afternoon concerts and afternoon tea I was on the go all day. There was one non-smoking evening in the casino and hopefully they will do more than one per week. I have experienced muster drill on a HAL ship and was worried that something might happen. We were mustered on deck beneath our assigned lifeboat. Who's to say if an emergency happens that you will be able to use that boat. It could be on fire, damaged or even washed away. Cunard musters you safely indoors away from the elements because you could be there for hours before they decide whether you will be leaving the ship. Also you are able to hear and see what is being demonstrated. On the HAL ship we were all crodwed together, standing in the sun and I was so hot I could have cared less and couldn't hear a thing. colmil Posted June 9, 2009 Author #28 Share Posted June 9, 2009 Sorry, I can't agree about the 'great entertainment', four singers and some dancers certainly does not provide this for me. In the course of my work, I see a lot of 'club style' acts, and many reasonable acts do perform on ships, but as a fellow traveller put it, they weren't even good enough as a support act. To think that that is the best they could do for a fortnight, someones backside needs kicking! Perhaps on longer trips they fly in other performers to meet the ship, perhaps someone could confirm? The Real PM Posted June 10, 2009 #31 Share Posted June 10, 2009 On HAL, not only is Roll taken (assuming your cabin # has not already been spotted by the crew with the clipboards), you have to actually GO ON DECK to your boat. I really appreciate knowing where my boat assignment is, precisely. So far as I know, HAL is the only line still mustering in this manner, and is proud of it. Michael, when you go for the drill, must you actually get on the life boat?
Boytjie Posted June 10, 2009 #32 Share Posted June 10, 2009 Michael, when you go for the drill, must you actually get on the life boat? No, you just line up at your station under the life boat.

NomDePlume Posted June 10, 2009 #34 Share Posted June 10, 2009 We are non smokers, could we end up in a cabin that has had previous guest smoking in it? The short answer is: yes. The long answer is: should you detect any trace of lingering tobacco smell, immediately let your cabin steward know and they will take care of it. They do an amazing job--I never smelled anything and was told by friends that the crew are very efficient in this regard.
The Real PM Posted June 10, 2009 #35 Share Posted June 10, 2009 No, you just line up at your station under the life boat. Thank you Peter. That is quite a photo. Where on earth were you standing to get a shot like that? One last question--do you climb a ladder to get onto the boat or do they swing it down and you climb over the rail? The only one I knew was a Chinese chippy in Batley;) The pubs on QV and QM2 are called the golden Lion because this is the logo of Cunard. He is standing on his back legs, wearing a crown and holding a globe, this is then surrounded by a triangle of what appear to be leaves

I believe the boats are lowered to the level of the Promenade deck. I think I saw that in the QM2 program Making of a Legend.

Oceans&Rivers Posted June 12, 2009 #43 Share Posted June 12, 2009 Not yet having sailed on QM2 (two weeks and counting), I am only going to comment on one thing. In 15+ cruises on a variety of ships, they have never checked which cabins are represented at muster drill. Things are done differently nowadays, with a search system. Roll calls are not held unless an emergency situation develops. Muster drill is compulsory for all passengers. This surely complies with current maritime law? Roll calls are taken on several lines we cruise. There are numerous staff members helping the person taking roll call, looking around for the stateroom numbers which are (on most or at least some lines, anyway) printed on the front of your life jacket. Crystal and Holland America both take the drill very seriously, in my opinion, with Celebrity much less so. Princess does it very differently and it has been so long ago that we cruised Princess, that I am not certain, but I don't think they take roll call at all. I am very glad the OP mentioned the amount of smoke on the QM2 because we are both very sensitive to smoke, and we were considering taking a QM2 crossing to get to another cruise in Europe, but until Cunard's smoking policy tilts very strongly in favor of non-smokers, especially in the staterooms and on the balconies, we will cross that idea off the list. Unfortunately.
brigittetom Posted June 12, 2009 #44 Share Posted June 12, 2009 Cunard does tilt very strongly in favor of non smokers. The faint oder of cigarette smoke is the new "Oh my God, I can't breathe". The QM2 has 3 very limited public smoking areas, one being the pool deck. Have you seen the size of the ship???????????????? If the excuse is the cabins, they clean them to perfection. If the excuse is the balcony, that can be hit or miss. What about the occupants on the next balcony who sit out there all night long and drink, swear, and throw things. It's hit or miss. Personally, I'll take a few wiffs of salt air deluted cigarette smoke anytime. Your choice.

wcudmore Posted June 16, 2009 #49 Share Posted June 16, 2009 There are only two bars/lounges on the QM2 that allow smoking in very small areas. All others, including the Chart Room, Commodore Club, Sir Samuel's, Queen's Room, Winter Garden, Veuve Clicquot Bar, Atlantic Room, etc. are non-smoking. Plus, the casino has non-smoking nights. Cruise lines, Cunard included, try to accommodate everyone. A small correction. The Commodore Club has the Cigar lounge attached, but it is completely isolated, and has a seperate ventilation system. fllady Posted June 20, 2009 #50 Share Posted June 20, 2009 I have to comment on the smoking part. I have asthma, and never have really been bothred with the smells, except in certain areas that are smaller and closed in. Which brings me to the elevators/lifts, will someone tell some of these women who must bathe in their perfume, that a little goes a long way and a lot can choke a horse. I have had to get off because of the choking smells of pefume.
