Where to Keep Our Stuff

Just curious, reading through the Carnival Documents and it states that they are not responsible for loss of money/valuables kept in your stateroom. I don't think there would be a problem but it makes me wonder about leaving money, camera, laptop and other items in the cabin while we head off to see the Ruins in Mexico? Or crash on the beach at Nachi Cocum? The obvious place to stash things would be the safe. But if I were a thief, that is the first place I would look! Any thoughts? Am I wasting energy thinking about this?

There is a small safe in the room. It is either activated by a magnetic strip card such as a credit card or gift card, etc. Or some ships have the digital combination safes that you put in your own combination.

We have never had anything stolen. Anything too big for the safe, I put in my suitcase, lock it, and slide it under the bed.

On any 'wet' excursion I use my waterproof beach safe/wallet - keep all valuables with me so I am not worried about anything left in my beach bag - I have a small laminated copy of the 1st page of my passport, S&S card, credit card, other picture ID, cash all in the beach safe around my neck at all times!

I have also always kept my valuables in the safe and have never had a problem (yet!) :)

The safe may be the first place a thief would look, but also the last place they'd be able to get into.

We've never had any problems leaving valuables such as cameras and laptops out in plain site of the cabin steward.

If it makes you feel better put them in a suitcase or a drawer.

IMO you are wasting energy worrying about it. Yes, sometimes theft happen on the ship but they are rare. You or more likely to have something stolen from you ashore than on the ship. I have so little concern that we don't use the safe for anything, though I don't leave cash out.

There was a posting the other day from a man who had over $500 stolen from his safe. I can't understand how this wouldn't be Carnival's responsibility as they are the only ones who can get into the room and into the safe?

Personally, I never use the safe in my cabin (or in hotels, for that matter). I hide money, credit cards, my passport etc. buried in my suitcase and then I lock my suitcase with a combination lock. I make it difficult for a would-be thief to steal my stuff--short of taking my entire suitcase--but I doubt a room steward would dare be seen leaving a cabin with someone's suitcase in tow.

12 Cruises and counting--I never have been robbed. I followed the same strategy some years back when I traveled for a living as a flight attendant. Our layover hotels were all over the U.S. and the Caribbean--never once was I robbed. Part of the trick is to make a would-be thief have to work harder to get to your valuables. Nine times out of ten, they'll move on to easier pickings elsewhere.

64 Carnival cruises and have never had anything come up missing. Don't take valuables with you...such as jewelry, etc. Leave that stuff home. Put your cash, credit cards, etc in the room safe. I've always left my laptop, camera and other electronic equipment on the vanity and never had a problem. The safe can only be opened by you...and security. You will use a card with a magnetic strip to open and close the safe....your choice of card...I usually use my "club" card for the local supermarket....

Take ONLY what you will need when going ashore. Your S&S card,ID and some cash to spend. Leave your credit cards on the ship....

So could his wife or whomever he's traveling with. That's more common than the steward taking anything.

"Gee Honey, I don't know what happened to the money. Someone MUST have stolen it right out of the locked safe. I had all this gold-by-the-inch from our last cruise, honest!" lol

I've seen these cool diversion safes that are hairspray or soda cans that you can unscrew and hide money, jewelry, etc. in.

I probably wouldn't use the soda can ones, just incase the room steward thought it was trash and threw it away:eek:

Here's a link if you like:

I never bring my laptop on vacation as I am trying to get away from it anyway.

I clean my wallet out before I go......I bring one credit card, my insurance card and my debit card. Any other cards, I just leave home, so I don't have them to lose.

Of course I bring my driver's license and passport.

Less is better when it comes to valuables.....even though I have never had a problem in 6 cruises. I also use the safe.

Welcome to Cruise Critic, its never wasting energy on being a safe conscience person. Thats a good thing.

The only thing I keep in the safe is my wad of cash, wallet and my passports, oh and turned off Cell phones. Everything like Electronics, CPAP, Laptop, Canon DSLR camera, JVC Camcorder and Meds like IBprophin or Advil I leave out. 16 cruises and never had a problem with missing items.

We use our safe for valuables, but our 1st 2 cruises we had a full size video camera with us that didn't fit in the safe. Never had any problems. I know my girls have left their jewelry laying on the dresser. Granted, it's just costume jewelry, but they've never had any of it go missing. As far as locking things in your suitcase, it's really not difficult to pop a zipper open. I typically don't take expensive jewelry with me & have stopped taking the video camera simply because I don't like carrying it around. That will change if I ever buy one of the small ones, though.

Are you inferring that a thief is able to get into your safe ??

If you are worried about the laptop, leave it at home.

How long do you think a Carnival steward (normally the only person who will enter your room other than you) would last if items started coming up missing ??

Unless someone found the card used to lock the safe, it takes 2 Carnival employees to open an unlocked safe (say if the card is lost) Highly unlikely. I rather imagine either the casino or bartender got the $500.
