Anyone see the news last nite? Cruise ship hits whale in SF

Recommended Posts

Here in Florida the penalties are severe for hitting Manatees. I can't imagine the excuse of saying you hit one because if you swerved you could cause injury to your passengers.

As responsible boaters we are always on the lookout for marine life. I would feel terrible if I hit anything with our boat.

NBC 11 ran the story on Friday night news also, they said that Princess cruise lines has denied hitting anything.

It should be interesting to see what Cruise Critic passengers have to say on their return

As for sonar interferring with the whales, I was just parroting what we were told on our whale watching excursion by the "marine biologist" student. You just never know who to trust these days with all the misinformation that gets tossed out about our ecology.

This cover up and denial talk is a little nutty I think...It's not like the captain or crew would have been aiming for it.

If a ship hit a whale it's a shame becuse we all agree they are beautiful and no one would have wanted to see it happen or to get hurt.

But deer and dogs and cats and other critters get hit by cars, and it's not like the drivers are aiming for them either.

(Just a little perspective...)

That's still under dispute.

I think the whale was a terrorist and was attacking the ship

The worst cruise I ever took was pretty damned good.

I know you were trying to be funny. Myself, I too try to be funny at times and do feel that I have a great sense of humor.

Unfortunately, due to the world situations and 9/11, I really believe that the "terrorist" comment is a bit out of place.

Please do not take this as me flaming you. I just feel there are those out there that may have either suffered a loss due to 9/11 or have someone somewhere fighting the war against terror that may be offended by that statement.

Otherwise, I really enjoy reading your posts and have learned greatly from them.

If there are those of you out there that feel I am out of bounds by this, I apologize, this is just my feelings.

Paw323, My DH and I just moved to San Jose from San Francisco this past Wednesday. I haven't quite learned what channels are where, yet. I saw the news story at 11pm. I do know that it was NBC. I hope this helps.

Sorry, this may only be a topic that is of interest to those of us in California. especially in San Francisco, as much as we love cruise ships and cruising. (We wish more would port here, actually)

We are also a little protective of our marine mammals. (think sea lions at pier 39) Whales are not unusual and often delight visitors when they are in the bay. Having cruise ships run in to them, is a little disturbing, but apparently it is not all that uncommon. Princess says they didn't, passengers say they did. I don't think anyone screamed coverup, it will just be interesting to see if anything else develops from this news story.

And HB, I am sorry about all of our losses in 9/11. Strange times we are living in when terrorism is almost a daily news story.

KNTV Channel 11 (cable channel 3) Which is actually sort of like the National Inquirer of news channels in the Bay Area. Family of 14 did post a link above to the bluewater network.

Patty,
Dolphins are very spiritual creatures, so it is perfectly natural to have an emotional reaction to them, I adore dolphins I have a huge collection of figures etc. Seems everyone who gets me gifts gets me dolphins, lol anyways Iam with you I pray the poor whale didn't suffer to badly.

One comment on whale watching....which I absolutely do not understand. Don't get me wrong. I don't care any more about whales than I do about cows. They are both mammals and they can eat Froot Loops for all I care, BUT...why do people get on boats and go out to annoy whales? I mean, how would you like it if someone came into your living room with an outboard motor running on their butt? And you're sitting there trying to read a book and they are circling you with their outboard motor butt whining away and you're watching them out of the corner of your eye hoping they don't get too close to scrape your skin off...

If you love whales, leave them alone. Later, I'll be glad to comment on people who "love" horses, then jump on their backs and make them haul your fat butt around...Okay...I'm done.

We were on the Coral Princess leaving SF on 5/6/04. We were on our balcony the whole time the ship was leaving, all the way past the GG Bridge. We did not feel anything, or hear about any of this until our return yesterday. There was a HAL ship that departed shortly before we did. I'm sure if it had been the Coral Princess there would have been some sort of buzz among the passengers, even if the crew was trying to be hush-hush.

Jen: Too bad you guys had to leave SF, but at least you're in SJ, closer to my beloved SHARKS! Yeah, the NBC affilliate is NBC 11, cable 3. I never cared much for their news production, either.

Hmm... it sounds that Coral could be exonerated at this point. We'll see about Regal, and the mystery HAL ship.

Y'all enjoy Mother's Day, and GO SHARKS!

Hi Paw323. I do miss SF, but we're not that far away- just far enough to get out of the fog
We'll probably be here until the fall, when we plan to move to SoCal. Just in time for the earthquake they're predicting
It was channel 11 that I saw the news report, at 11pm. I'm not sure which cable service we have.

The Sharks are kicking some tail this year. So much for the Dallas Stars. They didn't get far this time around.

Jen: Hope you're enjoying the Bay Area so far. I'm in the fog, in the Sunset... I'm used to it. SoCal will be nice, I like it there, and I'm sure y'all will too. Do you nurse for a private party, or in hospitals? I have a cousin who works at O'Connor.

Too bad about the Stars, but we still hate 'em. HA! Seems like they just fizzled when Turks got suspended. At least they have one Cup.

I saw Regal Princess in Skagway today, so there's no worse for wear there. It also looked like there were 2 HAL ships there too.

Hi Paw323.
We love it here. DH and I have actually been in SF since last June- give or take a couple months going back home to visit. San Jose is much warmer than SF, but it's a nice change.

I'm RN in surgery and DH is RN in ICU. We work for agencies that staff us in hospitals with needs. It's pretty cool to be able to travel anywhere for work. We're heading to Florida (cruise heaven) after the new year and New York after that. Then, we'll be on our way back to Cali, with a trip to Hawaii in the plans, as well.
I get bored easily, so it's great moving around.

Maybe the Stars will have it next year
So, for now, Go Sharks!

Do you suppose the big bang you hear ever so often while on the ship is a sea animal being hit? We sometimes hear bangs as if the ship hit a boat as jokes are made on board about it.

I have always wondered what the true bang/force was.

Comments?

Cindy,

Two weeks from now will be my first time on a "cruise". My previous experience on ships included a "big bang", but it was usually a 5-inch gun blowing up some real estate somewhere. I always found it comforting....
