Star - 1 day cruise?

Recommended Posts

We are thinking of booking the one day cruise in Sept. on the Star just to see what she is like. We are also thinking that we will just book a balcony to see what that is like as we want to take a cruise next year to Alaska but can't afford a suite for that one. I can't believe how much more the Alaska cruise would be than a carribean cruise or other warmer climates. :( But I know... paying for the awesomeness of Alaska. :D

I have already pretty much decided on the Pearl anyway (for next year) as she goes to Glacier Bay but just thought why not check out the Star. So what do you think? Anything we really must check out while on board? Will they have any shows on a one-nighter? Any tips are welcome. :D

I have never taken a 1 day, so I would like to know. Also, do you get credit towards Latitudes on a 1 day?

We have sailed on the Star twice, and we think she is a lovely ship, well maintained, with a super crew!

I'm so excited! I decided to book this trip even though it's only for one night I really just wanted to check out the Star. I do think it's gonna be rough getting off so quickly though. Anyway, I looked online and saw that there were balconies available but decided to call my PCC as I had a couple of questions. The cabins that showed online were midship but she found one for me on the stern! :D Woo hoo!

I used my cruise rewards cert. and I get to use my union discount which only works out to $7.00 difference  but she said that would pay for the first drink anyway... lol

I didn't ask her if it counts towards Lattitudes but that would be nice if it did.

Okay, what in your opinion is a must do/see/eat?

I would have dinner in either Le Bistro or Cagney's...both are very good.

Cagney's has gigantic shrimp in the shrimp cocktail! The filet mignon is wonderful and the truffle fries are delicious!

Le Bistro has escargot that are yummy and the Chocolate Fondue for dessert is great!

The Red Lion Pub is a nice place to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by...great "people watching" area.

Or the jacuzzi on the very front of the ship...nice!

BTW, we have sailed on the Star to Alaska in an AE suite (stern cabin) and it was WONDERFUL!

I did many 1 and 2 night cruises when I was a TA.(Retired)..I lived in San Pedro, so it was easy to do.

Honestly I wouldn't let a client who hasn't been on a full cruise do a one niter...I think they would be disapointed. On a one niter, you may not even meet your room steward.

I have done a one nighter on both the Pearl and Star from Seattle to Vancouver - while they are a good indicator of what the inside of a cruise ship looks like and you will get an idea of the services - pools, restaurants etc they are really nothing more than dinner/dance cruises and are often advertised as such - they tend to have a much younger crowd and the parties and bars run late into the night - you are also traveling at slow speed in generally calm inland waters while it can be rougher sailing up to Alaska - the pricing is usually very low - on my two previous one nighter I got credit for Latitudes but with the changes to the program I don't know if this is still the case.

If I wasn't doing an Alaskan cruise this year I would probably be joining you on the one nighter - last year I had a balcony only because I got such a good deal on one - where a balcony can come in handy on an Alaskan cruise is when you are touring Glacier Bay - nice to be able to view the Glaciers in the warmth and comfort of your cabin and not out on the cold and windy deck.

Hope these thoughts help

Cheers

:D You are too funny! :D

Spoiled Suite Brats, you're going to have a blast. I was also on the two dinner/dance cruises Urban_Trekker was on, and one other, and I found them to be a great introduction to cruising. They have always had a show with a production number and plenty of other entertainment throughout the ship. All the dining rooms are open, so this is your chance to try something different. Just be sure to be one of the first aboard so you can get a reservation in one of the poplular venues. I would suggest either Cagney's or Teppanyaki.

Another thing I've found on the one-night cruises is that with a younger crowd, the sailaway party on the pool deck will ROCK!

So sorry about the bad link.:o

We did the one night on the Star after a 7 day Alaska cruise. I would say, do not judge NCL by a 1 night cruise. I felt there was a HUGE difference in the feeling between the 7 day and the one night. It felt like everyone was out of their cabin wanting to make the most of the one night. There were crowds everywhere, and I didn't particularly like it. I'm not sorry I did it as it was the bridge between Alaska and the Pacific Coastal which were both outstanding.

I'm not saying don't take the one nighter, just don't think all NCL cruises would be like that.

Also, be aware that there is no baggage handling getting off the ship. You will disembark with your luggage.

SSB, how did you like your short cruise?

We were also on the Star for the 1-nighter this year and after doing so many of these repo cruises over the years, I think this was the best one (and yes, they count towards latitudes credit)!

A snapshot of our time onboard:

> very quick embarkation (2:30pm)

> check out cabin(s)

> quick pop up to the buffet for a snack

> out on deck to meet friends for a drink

> off to bingo to win $10,000 and/or a suite upgrade

> change for dinner

> dinner in Versailles (very, very good - and the staff were incredible, all round)

> Jean Anne Ryan show, Band on the Run (very good and even better than 2 yrs ago on the Pearl)

> Stop by and say hello to Future Cruise guy and buy another one for next year

> Duty Free shopping

> Casino Donation (I had been up but then pressed my luck on the $5 slots and gave it all back, plus some!)

> Second City Comedy troupe

> post-midnight snack at the buffet (cookies and ice cream)

> Sweet dreams

> early AM - in-room coffee and watched the sail into Vancouver from cabin balcony

> Shower with Aramis bath products (these are nice!)

> Leisurely, uncrowded breakfast (great french toast)

> Last minute pack-up

> Casual, no rush disembarkation (9:25am)

Back to reality!
