Aquahound Posted July 12, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2009 Rather than research it, why not just ask here? My wife asked me a cruise question that I was not able to answer, so I turned to the experts. What does Celebrity's "X" stand for? Sorry if this has been an ad-nauseum topic...I dont read the X boards too often. :o

"X in the Greek alphabet stands for “ch,” the first letters of the family name Chandris, the original Greek founders of Chandris Cruises. Which became Royal Caribbean!!" tom_uk Posted July 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 12, 2009 It's an anglicisation of the Greek-alphabet character that is used for the 'Ch' at the beginning of the name 'Chandris'. Celebrity Cruises was founded by John Chandris, and the family were involved in shipping for quite a while before then. Prior to Celebrity there was Chandris Line and Chandris Cruises, and they all had the 'X' symbol. I've just thought - presumably this is also why the 'chiro' symbol includes an X? "X in the Greek alphabet stands for “ch,” the first letters of the family name Chandris, the original Greek founders of Chandris Cruises. Which became Royal Caribbean!!" Partially right ... Royal Caribbean merged with Celebrity --- here's the details from Wikipedia: Celebrity Cruises is a cruise line founded in 1988 by the Greek Chandris Group.[1] In 1997 Celebrity Cruises Ltd. merged with Royal Caribbean International to become Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which operates Celebrity, Royal Caribbean International, Azamara Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises and CDF Croisieres de France. Today the company is headquartered in Miami, Florida in the United States. The signature "X" on Celebrity ship funnels is the Greek letter chi, for "Chandris".[2][3] Common features on board are aft-glass dining rooms, formal foyer areas, alternative restaurants, balcony and suite staterooms, large pools and lounging areas, signature bars and lounges, libraries, elegant spas and gyms, as well as relaxing areas. John Chandris, Chairman of Celebrity at the time of the merger, became and remains a member of the main board of Royal Caribbean and was, I believe, chairman of that corporation in 2005 & 2006.
