How many appetizers and entrees do you eat?

Recommended Posts

Are these not suppose to be 6 coarse meals? We start with the cheese platter(goes good with the great bread), then an appetizer, then a soup, then a salad, then the entree, then the desert.

On nights I can't decide I would order 2 apps. maybe all 3 soups and sometimes 2 entrees. Every once and while 2 deserts, or one plus ice cream or sherbert. Escargo and lobster usually 2 orders.

Multiple appetizers and entrees, I think it's called over-eating, an unfortunate American phenomenon. Did anyone see the statistics this week about the cost of over-eating in this country? An overweight person costs our medical system an average of an additional $1,400 per person per year compared to someone of normal weight. That unfortunately, hits us all in the pocketbook.

On our last cruise we had a round of cocktail shrimp appetizers everynight! Sometimes I would also eat my daughters leftover shrimp. In addition I would order 2 more appetizers, 1 or 2 entrees and 1 or 2 desserts..On lobster night I would have at least 2 lobster tails (at least). I love food and cruising just gives me an excuse to try all the dishes I don't have back home. ;)

No shrimp and lobster in Miami? Just kidding.;)

Isn't that a bit of a generalization. Just because you have 2 apps doesn't mean you are over-eating. Having a soup/salad, another app, an entree, and dessert is actually a 4 course dinner...just like a land-based 5 star restaurant might have...not to mention that the cruise line usually has smaller portions.

Small portions are in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Me personally, I order an appetizer, sometimes also a salad or soup, one entree and one dessert. Occasionally DH will order two of something, and many times we each will order our own dessert and then another to share if something sounds really good.

The only time I've ever asked for a second entree was on lobster night. I actually asked to just have an additional tail put on the plate, I didn't want two complete entrees as I knew I wouldn't eat the potato/vegetables from the second one so figured it would be a waste. But the waiter still brought both complete plates. :(

When we cruised with another couple, the man ordered two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts each and every night. No, he's not overweight. :) I couldn't believe how much food he could eat, but he cleaned his plate every time.

I usually order an appitizer and a cold soup, one entree, and dessert. DH usually orders an appitizer, salad, one entree and dessert. We both leave the main dining room feeling comfortably full. There is plenty of food available - we usually get a snack after the evening show or visiting the casino.

and all this on top of a huge breakfast and lunch and lying around all day.

If my cruise is interrupted because cruisers have to be airlifted off to hospital (or airlifted off anyway on disembarkation) I'll know who to come after!

We took FOS to the Western Caribbean in June and, I will admit, I ate like a pig. But I did not gain a single pound! We walked all over the ship on sea days and on port days, we walked and walked and walked! I got more exercise in that week than I've had in years! And it didn't feel like exercise because we were constantly seeing new things.

My DH ordered multiple entrees a few times and "taught" our tablemates. That way you can try different dishes rather than have to settle on just one.

Hey Sleepless! I think I've figgered out the reason for your nightly disorder!:D

Don't get me wrong, I believe overeating (combined with little or no exercise, and lack of nutritional knowlege) is a huge problem (not just on cruise ships).

I didn't realize you were responding to the original post which mentioned 2 apps and 2 entrees...thought it was more of a post based on many others' responses.

Just had me thinking of times where I might order a chilled soup, melon and ham (one of my fav apps), one of the entrees (or just a 3rd app), and sometimes a dessert (I sometimes have sorbet)... if that is overeating I'd be in a heap of trouble. :)

My philosophy has been get one of everthing and 2 of what you like.

I never order something that I can't eat and have found that the soups and salads are low on the priority list. What I find is that the portions allow us to have more than 1 thing. There is nothing on the menu that I need to try. We've been on enough RCCL cruises that we've tried pretty much tried everything. Many times my DW and I will split something that we both like in addition to our first choices. I've ordered surf and turf enough times for dinner that I have no problem ordering Fishermans Plate and prime rib or a filet in Portofino to go with the seafood skewer.

Top of the Page:D

Clearly, you aren't over eating.

My response was based the the OP's 2 to 3 entrees. Personally, I think after having 2 to 3 appetizers, 3 entrees are a bit much. Not sure many people could eat that much food, but I've been wide eyed more than once on cruises seeing how much food some people can pack away.

Food is one thing I look forward to on the cruise. I've never been bashful when it comes to dinner in the MDR. If something looks tempting, I order it. Even if that means ordering 2 or 3 appetizers and 2 or 3 entrees.

I'm not a glutton by any means (but I can eat quite a bit sometimes), but I just think cruising gives me an opportunity to try things that I typically wouldn't try at a normal dinner in a restaurant.

Does anyone else do this?

Between the two of us, we usually order 3 of each course to share. It doesn't feel as wasteful and I still get to try 3 different apps, entrees and desserts. Oh, and we always order a cheese plate to go. The perfect snack with a glass of wine while we people watch later. ;)

I'd hate to think what my scale would say if I did that!

But I do like to try different things, and what we (family) do is order an entree or two for the table and all get a taste of it.

Funny you mention that - many of the waiters that I have had would start to automatically bring me out 2nd and 3rd entrees that they thoughht I should try. It was a nice gesture and they usually had good suggestions.

You don't get THAT with freestyle dining! Chalk up one more plus for traditional dining.:D

Diinner is a very important part our our cruising experience!!

I always order several appetizers, soup and two entree followed by dessert and ice cream!! However, I eat what I order!

Our waiter will start dropping off all the extra dinners at our table as the cruise goes on!

I weigh myself before I hit the Jammer on the first day and continue to weigh myself daily to monitor myself.

I think it depends on which ship you are on...and what the serving sizes are like...but have 1 app, 1 entree, 1 dessert and everything combination there of up to 2 apps, 2 entree, 2 desserts...

Tiramisu is a definate 2 please!
