ranchingal Posted August 4, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 4, 2009 Has anyone cruised out of Galveston during Mardi Gras? Is it really difficult to get to the cruise port during the festivities? We have sailed twice during Mardi Gras. Experienced no problems. I think most of the activities are in the evening hours. Only difficult thing might be getting a room reservation. Reserve early. Texas Tillie Posted August 5, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Thanks Angie - Mardi Gras is February 5th through 16th in 2010. Have you cruised in February and how is the weather in Galveston in February? Ah, Texas weather! In February, Galveston probably won't get below 30 degrees at night or above 80 degrees during the day.:D:eek::p:rolleyes:
Cruisin Dave Posted August 13, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Beware of Sea Fog in February. This delayed our departure by about 3 hours.
big_schots Posted August 28, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Two years ago, I cruised out of Galveston on the day of the main parade. I was worried, and unnecessarily so. We experienced absolutely no problems, when arriving at 11:30 A.M. Almost all the parades and festivities are south of the terminal area, towards the seawall, and we didn't experience any closed streets or clogged traffic. We drove in the day of the cruise, so I can not attest to the general Galveston area during the week of the Mardi Gras festivities. I've heard it is a madhouse, but not around the pier at that hour. If I remember correctly the parade started around 3:00 P.M. Arrive early and you should be fine.
Galveston Cruiser Posted August 28, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 28, 2009 To avoid traffic on the island, exit Harborside to the cruise terminal. First weekend of parades are on Seawall starting at noon. The following weekend, parades are on Strand and Post Office, but traffic will move smoothly on Harborside. You should have no problems.
