Security On Ships

was going to bring this up when I got back but forgot..

I only saw 1-2 security officers by the pool during the whole cruise. Lots of times there were 16-19 year olds (give or take) "hanging" under the stairwells with security no where to be found...do they use undercover officers? if not I only saw 1-2 officers on the whole ship...

They have cameras alot of places where you can't see them. Lol security on the cruise is so over rated. All those stories about people getting pushed overboard are false. Trust me, your safe on the cruise. There are over 3000 passengers on the big ships so if something happens it will be reported.

I agree with the comment on the cameras. Cameras are in all public places on the ship. Security is not only at the pool, they are all over the ship. If there is a problem at the pool, then you will see them there more often.

If you read "Cruise Confidential" (which I totally recommend) you will know that Carnival uses ex-military, Special Forces for their security. They are unassuming and easily blend in. They are the Best of the Best and are able to handle any situation.

Did you notice the security staff at the gangway when you boarded or went ashore? There's usually more than 2 there.

Security staff will be monitoring the video cameras throughout the ship, and will come when called, but they do not stake out an area unless there has been a problem reported.

I do think they can use plain clothes if there is a need to be anonymous but I don't think they do that often.

Was there a reason for Security to be present? Besides,,,,"hanging?"

I know of a private ship [not a yacht, a 400ft ship] where every crewmember is an ex Navy Seal. But there is no "security," as such!:D

You will have to trust me on this as I will not ever post details, but Carnival security is excellent and most cities would be hard pressed to have their police department do as good a job. The security department has tools you will never see and never know about that enhance everything they do. This is in addition to wonderful coverage of all public areas by 24 hour video monitoring.

On my cruise last year, I was at a bar watching my hometown team in the playoffs. There was a group of guys there playing drinking games and getting very loud at the other end of the bar. We noticed 3 nicely dressed guys at the bar that looked like passengers. Turns out they were all security in plain clothes. So just cause you don't notice uniformed security, doesn't mean they are not there.

No reason not to trust you, and understood about not talking about details, but how could you know? Were you an ex-security officer on Carnival? Or perhaps sold them some "tools"?

I'm still trying to figure out why teens "hanging" under a stairwell is cause for security? Teens hang out, that's what they do.

Right. Loitering is not a crime on a cruise ship. I think security could be more visible at time in enforcing rules:

  • removing articles from lounge chairs unused for over 30 minutes
  • escorting children out of the adult pool
  • handling disruptive drunks
  • stopping rowdy youngsters

All this is in addition to the most important job - keeping the ship and passengers safe.

What were those 16 - 19 years olds doing that security was needed. Just standing under the stairs is not really a problem. As for people safety on the ships. I think that for the most part you are pretty safe. I watch out for my wife just as I would when we are out any where. I would never say that people are pervectly safe on ships. I don't know who the people are working or sailing on the ships. I think of it as if you just moved into a new house. You don't know anything about the neighbors or anything about the neighborhood. So you are kind of better off to be careful and keep an eye out for anything that doesn't look right. I know a lot of people think that nothing will happen to them on a ship. But, I am in law enforcement and know that no one is ever prefectly safe. You have to watch out for youself and loved ones.

I am a consultant to a transportation company and the security people on one of the ships were nice enough to share some of the details of their system with me.

That's pretty neat. I read where some ships were covertly carrying sonic guns to use against pirates and other bad guys. This apparently fires sound rather than lead bullets, and is loud and intense enough to disable someone from some distance away.

I hope all cruise ships are carrying weapons like that.

I feel very safe on board Carnival

NO drunk drivers....that is a big plus right there :)

I think it is a shame that the media blow up any incident out of proportion

the truth is that MOST of the "overboard" stories are suicides or just really drunk people acting foolishly

People commit suicide in hotels and motels too...yet you don't hear much about it

People do stupid things when they are drunk like walking into traffic or jumping into hotel pools from balconies and they die like that but you don't hear much about it

I live in a tourist area and have read stories of tourist tragedies that don't get national coverage ....jet ski accidents, pool accidents, people getting drunk and walking into traffic when they are partying....but if it was on a cruise ship it would be all over the news

I think that a FEW angry family members have stirred this up...the dad of the woman missing from the alaska cruise a few years ago (seems to be suicide) and the family of George Smith who can't accept the fact he most likely was drunk and fell

Recently a sad case : guy murders wife on a cruise...but look how many cases of domestic violence and murder sadly occur all over the country without national news exposure

A few years ago a girl died on a Carnival Cruise...when she took her boyfriends Methadone *mistake? getting high?? I hardly think that is Carnval's fault....give me a break

I think cruises are (statistically) safer than being on land <grin>

as for going overboard?? That seems pretty complicated

the rails are high and it is just about impossible to fall UP and over them

Just remember that the media loves to pump up any story about cruises

cause it is interesting and "juicy" <grin>

Bad news, that wasn't teens, that was adults thinking they were teens :D

Well here is the thing, what type of vacation would you have if everywhere you turned there was some 300lb guy standing there in a bright yellow shirt that has Security written across the back ?

Yes there are times from reading on here that they could of been more proactive, however, in all my years of sailing with them I have only had one problem and honestly, in the couple of minutes it took for them to get there, the problem children had been dealt with.

In a word, NO!

C'mon you can tell me, those special tools...they're those "Segways" like Paul Blart: Mall Cops has, but they have special "anti obnoxious drunks and unruly teens" ray guns mounted on them, right?

Teenagers hanging around under a stairwell? Big whoop! Maybe they should have been thrown into the brig along with old people who save lounge chairs all day. It's a cruise!!! Life's too short to get upset over such trivial matters.

removing towels from chairs and kids from pools is not security...think of issues you'd call police for at home.

I know enough about ship security to NEVER screw around with them. Think most lethally trained military on the planet, and you'll be close.
