Pick my own room, or let them pick?

I am a first timer and looking to book on the Holiday with Carnival. I have the option to preselect which room for an extra fee, or just let them select. DH does not care if we have a interior room or window, cause as he says "I'll be medicated out the wazzu either way". As he gets motion sick, would it be better to make sure we get a room towards the middle of the boat, or will this not make much of a difference? So is it worth the extra expense to pick?

If your husband suffers from motion sickness then I would select my own cabin... Low and in the center moves the least. The higher you go and closer you get to either end the more motion there will be.

All he needs to do though is get a prescription for the patch... http://www.transdermscop.com/

Those work wonderfully and the side effects are pretty minimal, he won't feel "medicated out the wazzu". ;)

I agree about picking your own cabin as low and midships as possible to decrease seasickness.

I disagree that the patch has pretty minimal side effects; some people have a lot of trouble with it. My husband has good results withy meclizine, which is generic Bonine. He takes it at night, so if it makes him a little sleepy, it doesn't matter.

Whatever medication you choose, I'd suggest trying at home in advance of your cruise so you know what the effects are.

I can't believe that they charge to pick your own stateroom -- that's terrible:mad:

Agree with lower deck, mid-ship. Also, look at the deck above you -- make sure you are not under a restaurant, swimming pool or gym (can be noisy). If they select for you, they can pick whatever other people do not want.

If you don't mind me asking. . . . how much do they charge to select your own room?

It's actually very common to be charged for the 'luxury' of picking your own stateroom. I booked a cruise on Royal Caribbean last summer and I chose an inside guarantee. I saved $150 per person by doing the guarantee instead of picking my cabin myself. I still got a good location (midship, towards the top of the ship). Questions about guarantee cabins are very common on CC. In my opinion, if you don't care about cabin location, do a guarantee and save a few bucks, (or a couple hundred in my case). If you are very prone to seasickness, or want to be in a certain location (by the buffett, casino, not near an elevator etc etc) then pick your cabin yourself. In some cases, there are no guarentee cabins available and you have to pick your own cabin. Such was the case on the cruise I'm going on next week.

I think this person misspoke. Carnival doesn't charge a "fee" to pick your own cabin, but it's cheaper to take a guarantee than it is to book a specific cabin. It's not a fee, per se, but it is cheaper to let the cruise line give you their left overs via booking a guarantee.

Thank you for the advice. I ended up picking a different cruise than we were originally looking at as we still qualified for Early Saver's discounts and could choose a room for much less. We are way down at the bottom of the boat, but we don't mind being an elevator ride away from everything.
