Tipping

OKay so I am a bit confused on the tipping thing. We haven't booked yet but are looking at a Cruise with Carnival on the Conquest. From what I understand you have a fee already on your account for tips that is distributed to certain staff.....who all does this tip go to?

I hear people talking about tipping this person or that person. I don't have a problem with tipping but at the same time some people seem to tip everyone...who is it NECESSARY to tip and who isn't. If there is already a tip going to the room attendant what is the point of tipping him/her again? What about the Camp Carnival people I have heard people tipping them..is that necessary custom or just osmethign someone wanted to do?

I don't want to seem like I an ungrateful to these people but I can also see my cash flying out the window and less things that we are able to do while in th different countries.

TIA for your reply!

In our budget for our trip how much should we allot for tips on average.....including the ones that are already on your account? And who do we need to tip that isn't already getting a tip from the one on account?

Auto tips will be added to you onboard account. This is 10.00 per person, per day and is broken down this way:

$3.50 per day for stateroom services

5.50 per day for dining services

1.00 per day for alternate services which is distributed among other kitchen and hotel staff.

This is the standard. Many people tip a little extra - in cash at the end of the week-to those who they think have done a wonderful job giving them personalized service. For instance, I usually give a little extra to the room steward and his assistant and for the dining room waiters. Sometimes their might be a favorite bartender, also. I always tip the dealers in the casino; win, lose or draw.

Camp Carnival counselors are not included in the tipping thingie... So, if you wish to tip them, fine. Most folks do.

For information, go to Carnival.com and at the bottom, click on "frequently asked questions". This will answer most of your inquiries.

All you need to tip is the amount stated in the 1st post...any additional you decide to tip is at your discretion, and if you feel what you've already tipped isn't sufficient.

When you hand your bags to the porters, it's customary to tip $1-2 per bag, depending on how heavy they are.

Then, there will be tips for taxis, if you use them.

15% is already added to any drink purchase, be it alcohol or soda....(yes, soda is extra!!) so you don't have to tip extra there, either!

Get the cruise brochure from Carnival (they'll send you one if you request it!) and it will detail everything you need to know!

don't drink so wont be at bars don't gamble so wont be in the casino.....well that is at least two tips to totally knock off the list! LOL

How much do you typically tip each person at the end of the week?

If I have pre-paid the tips...some lines call it a service charge...I don't usually tip waiters anything more. As for room stewards, the amount I've most often seen -- and generally use myself -- is an extra $20 per steward (there are usually 2) at the end of the week. **But this is not necessary!

You should know, by the way -- you said "don't drink so won't be at bars" -- if you DO drink sodas, bottled water, some specialty coffees, juice during the day (other than at breakfast) -- all this comes from the bars, and all this will come with a slip you'll sign, with a 15% tip added on.

Thanks for that info..I have never cruised so I wasn't sure about where you would buy drinks that aren't alcoholic...but if you are already being charged a tip then you shouldn't need to give more unless you just requested something way off the wall or something to that extent or just felt the need to pay above and beyond.....

The bar tenders and bar servers are not included in the tip pool -- only the servers in the dining venues throughout the ship. So you are not tipping them more...you are merely tipping them.

All the main-line cruise lines have a similar charge for the bar tenders and bar servers.

And you then also need to know that if you order sodas or specialty coffees in the dining room (or anywhere where you're eating), you will again be charged for the drinks, and a tip will be on the receipt you'll be handed, to sign.

Other than room service or porters at the terminal, I can't think of anyone else typically tipped onboard a ship after pre-paid or added gratuity, or cash at the end (the old fashioned way).

We have given extra at the end of cruises, but that is entirely up to you.

One thing to remember when you are purchasing a beverage is that there is a line for additional tips on the receipt. Draw a line through that area and total your own check. It can look like there is no tip and I know some people I've cruised with before didn't see the auto-gratuity and tipped twice. Nice income for the bar servers and they do work hard, but 30% gratuity is a bit high.
