Vatican on Sunday

My cruise leaves on a Monday from Rome and arrives back in Rome on a Sunday. That means that a one day stay either pre or post cruise will be on a Sunday. Is it true that the Vatican museums are closed on a Sunday? I was thinking of booking RomeinLimo for a private tour, but if the museums are closed then I'm thinking I won't really need a guide. What do you think?

The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays except for the last Sunday of the month when it is free and only open until about 12:30.

Adding to what Hank said, on that one free Sunday each month it's even more crowded than usual, if you can imagine that.
