CintiPam Posted August 24, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Anyone know whether they are re-routing ships and skipping Athens as a port as a result of the wildfires they are having there? I saw that the government has announced a state of emergency. The fires are in the suburbs about 20 miles from central Athens and the opposite direction from Pireaus. Although you can see the smoke from downtown, nothing there should be affected. For up-to-date information on the wildfires and their effect on tourism in Athens, I highly suggest you consult the Athens forum on sister website tripadvisor dot com. The local Destination Experts in Athens post updates regarding the situation several times per day. So far, no effect, other than the smoke seen from downtown. (What a sad picture I just saw on CNN of smoke high over the Acropolis.)
