patdon Posted February 24, 2005 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2005 Is the semi-submersible excursion worth doing (for someone who is not able to go snorkling)? Our cruise offers this excursion at Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Aruba, St Maarten, and Grand Bahama. If it's worth doing (to see lots of colorful tropical fish), which location would offer the best viewing?
OCruisers Posted February 25, 2005 #2 Share Posted February 25, 2005 For reasons I won't bother to explain in full (the husband was badly sunburned ....) so I went on this semi-sub with a cruise friend in Nassau. Have to admit that it was MUCH better than I expected. Also :o hate to admit :o ... but actually saw more fish than I do at times snorkeling! Give it a try! Happy Sailing! vjblk Posted February 25, 2005 #3 Share Posted February 25, 2005 It's been a few years but my sister and I did the Atlantis in Grand Cayman. We saw alot of fish and other marine life. It was beautiful. I too thought we saw more than snorkeling!
Andee Posted February 25, 2005 #4 Share Posted February 25, 2005 We were on a group trip to Alaska, and a semi-submersible boat ride was included. Didn't think it would be that great, but we loved it.
RumRunner01 Posted February 26, 2005 #5 Share Posted February 26, 2005 I did the sub in Grand Cayman in 1997 and was not impressed. Very few fish, murkey and stuffy. I saw way more fish snorkeling. I would never do this again in any other area. But then again I'm a snorkeler and prefer to be out in it. I suppose for the non-snorkeler it would be fun. floridaone Posted February 27, 2005 #6 Share Posted February 27, 2005 We did the Atlantis in St Thomas. A little expensive but worth it.
patdon Posted March 4, 2005 Author #7 Share Posted March 4, 2005 Some of you are talking about the Atlantis submarine. I'm asking about the semi-submersible -- a boat that stays on the surface, but has a 5 or 6 ft deep hull, with windows. At least that's what I'm imagining from reading about it. I really wonder how much you actually see, do you have a window to yourself (or is it crowded), and which island would have the best viewing. Phoenix cruiser Posted March 4, 2005 #8 Share Posted March 4, 2005 We did this in St. Marteen. As RumRunner01 stated, murky, fairly colorless, and the same fish swimming round for 1/2 an hour (at least the same kind of fish, for all I know they were on the tour's payroll- LOL). :(
