A day in Bergen

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We will be visiting Bergen for a Day. Our priorities are the funicular, Bryggen, Fish Market and the Fantoft Stave Church.

Would someone in the know be able to suggest the order in which to do these things.

Thank you!

Hi,

I suggest Mt Floyen instead of Mt Ulriken - Bryggen, Fish Market and Floibanen are very close to each other and the order here does not matter.

Then you only need a transport to Fantoft Stave Church. You should visit it before or after the other things.

If you're visiting with a cruise ship, check what other ships are in port and their arrival times. The numbers/timing of other cruise passengers visiting can make a difference.

The Bryggen, Fish Market and Funicular are very close together. In my opinion the best thing is to see how long the queues are at the Funicluar and visit there when these are a reasonable length. The Bryggen and Fish Market can be done anytime.

However, the Stave Church requires you to travel quite a way out of the city centre and will need transport to do so. I suggest finding your transport method to the Church first. Everything else can be done afterwards.

Here is some information on getting to the stave church - copied from another thread:

Getting to the Stave Church:

For this you'll need to take the Bybanen, which is the lightrail that runs every 10 minutes from one corner of the lake in the city centre. The terminal is coloured orange and grey and you should spot it, but if not then just ask anyone and they will point you in the right direction. There are ticket machines here which take cash or card, and have an english language option. There is only one route, so you can't get on the wrong one! The best station to get off at is Paradis, which is about a 20 minute ride from town. From there the church is just a few hundred metres walk, it's probably best to plan and print a map for this. Then just hop on the lightrail back to the centre and while away the last couple of hours.

You get the tram from Byparken in Bergen. Some 7-11 sell tickets. Guidebooks recommended getting off the tram from Bergen at Paradis. If getting off here, walk up the steps behind the station, then follow the signs. When you come to the wooded area, take the path up the hill which is very steep with many steps. However I think it is better to get off at the Fantoft stop and walk on the road behind the supermarket and through the woods

Also, the order may depend on the weather. Bergen is a rainy town! If it is rainy and the clouds are low, you may not see much from Mt Floyen (the funicular). The stave church near Bergen is a reconstruction...if you are going to Oslo you can see a real one at the Folk museum. The trolley information above is correct. It is about a 10 minute walk from the trolley stop.
