If you want to get the "whole Queen Experience", just do like the rest of us and take a few ballroom dance lessons. You just might like it.

Oh we have! But right now, DH just had a knee replacement and will have the other one done in October. I have achilles tendon issues....so it's not in the cards for now. :(

Ballroom dancing is great exercise for people who have had total knee replacement surgery. I've had three total knee replacements (twice on one knee) and we go out dancing at least twice a week here at home. Our ballroom dance instructor was back teaching 3 months after his knee replacement surgery. The key to success is doing the rehab exercises diligently.

We are looking forward to dancing every night possible on the Queens Room dance floor during our upcoming January QM2 28 day WC segment.

Ballroom dancing is good exercise full stop. Sometimes when we've danced all evening we feel it the next morning. But hey, I'm not complaining.

This is exactly the intolerant attitude that scares social dancers away from the floor.

Really? I am a social dancer, and I am not offended at all. I received my ballroom training in Vienna, Austria, and I am used to crowded floors (5,000 people attending a ball equals a big crowd) and I've even had collisions. Again, it's rather unavoidable. You smile, apologise, and keep dancing. I was on a QM 2 crossing earlier this month, and I never noticed nasty looks. Perhaps I am blissfully oblivious.

However, having said this, common sense and courtesy dictate that dancers make room for each other, which includes inexperienced ones staying in the centre and the faster dancers travelling around the edge of the floor. You don't want this to happen: Brutal-crash-in-dance-Brutal-Crash-im-Tanz-Accident-brutal-dans-la-danse.jpg

Similar to swimming in a public pool. At our local pool they have sessions for Ladies Only, lane swimming, Golden Oldies etc and when the specialist groups are not using the pool it's just general swimming. However, you want to try taking your kids down during that time, the looks you get from those who think that the importance of their swimming lengths in the pool far outweighs your time splashing around in the shallow end.

But you wouldn't use the deep end of the pool, which is where one swims, if you can barely keep your head above water, right? It's about safety. The same is true for the line of dance. I have seen some nasty accidents, including a broken back on dance floors, and following the line of dance is as much about courtesy as it is about safety!

Fear not, there is always discofox for that:

Great video. Seems that "Discofox" could plant themselves in the middle of the Queen's Ballroom and not disturb any of the regulars following the outside stately line-of-dance circuit, except for the fact that all the gentlemen would have their heads craned around watching the flashy 'skin' show happening on dance floor central. What fun!

Discofox ? More like Discojive. That really is some jive .. and is there anything more sexy than a backless dress?

Couldn't see any man giving 'murderous looks' if she were cavorting in the Queens Ballroom. Thanks for the pleasant diversion Persephone.

That discofox looks to be based on Hustle, not something I've seen much of in the QR. I was at a competition a couple of weeks ago, that costume would have been fairly conservative (Q-Step, what do you think?).

I'm wondering, do the people with the new knees find all the Quicksteps the QRO plays challenging?

Or there would be a proliferation of 'Spin Turns' to keep those interested gentlemen like myself in good view.

YeeHa!

I think you would be surprised at the number of people on the dance floor with knee replacements. For me, the knee replacements have actually made it easier for me to dance all types of dances (including "all the Quicksteps the QRO plays") since my knees no longer hurt while I'm dancing.;)

Looks like there are more new knees than I thought. Several years ago, there was a lady, loved cha-cha, but would only dance with me because the other guys were terrible at leading. She never told me exactly why, so I don't know if it was just luck or I was doing something right, but it looks like I've been worrying about knees more than necessary.

PS- forgot to disagree earlier- Fantasy, making good floorcraft on a crowded floor look easy is hard work. Not just physically, but keeping track of you, your partner and what's going on takes a lot of mental bookkeeping. Somebody a while ago claimed this is supposed to be fun- not likely.

Sorry Axelskater but I cannot accept your argument.

You clearly imply that you have a choice of different sessions with different levels of expertise. No such choice exists in the Queens Room and one has to accept that an awful lot of Cunard's guests also paid their fare with the expectation of being able to ballroom dance to a reasonable standard.

I actually don't usually have that choice. Yes it exists. But, I work during most freestyle advanced sessions. Therefore, unless I have a competition coming, I am practicing during the public sessions with beginners. It doesn't bother me one bit as we all paid the same. Just because someone gets in the way of my pattern, I would never give them a dirty look or make them feel inferior. I was a beginner once too, and there is plenty of room for everyone.

A dance session consists of whatever the orchestra is playing at that moment. A brain-dead dirge for the shufflers- time for me to take a break, I'll sit down. But, say, one of the Quicksteps that some band leaders are wont to play- that's a demanding dance, not forgiving of any hesitation.

A parallel is stopping in the middle of the gangway because "It's my cruise, I can do what I want". In the middle of the day who cares. But in the general clamor to get off after arrival- very rude not to step aside.
