Port of New Orleans Question

So I am posing this to Carnival guests who have sailed from New Orleans before.

My wife and I are on the Dream on September 24. (Can't wait) We have a 12:00-12:30 check in time. We are considering arriving at the port around 9:00am, leaving our bags with the porter and heading over to the French Quarter for breakfast. Has anyone done this before? It appears that the port and the quarters are only a few blocks from each other.

Thoughts?

If arriving to the port by cab ask driver to wait, drop off luggage and then go to the French Quarter by cab. I would say it's a little more then a few blocks.

I agree with this. Keep your cab to drive you to the French Quarter after you drop off your luggage. While it isn't that far, you have to navigate across railroad tracks which can be tricky on foot and adds distance. Incoming and outgoing traffic will be heavy and could be dangerous on foot due to the layout to exit the port area.

Have a great cruise!

Totally agree with you. The French Quarter is about 2 miles away, so you would certainly need to call a cab. It is HOT in New Orleans in September.

Alternatively, unless you just have your heart set on visiting the French Quarter (which IMHO once is enough), you could take your taxi to Harrah's casino/hotel which is very close to the port. You could drop your luggage with the bell hop in the lobby there, and they will store it for you. Then you could hang out in the casino and eat breakfast, or walk a very short distance and hang out at the outlet mall next door. Then when it's time to make your way to the port, there is a guy out front at Harrah's that will whistle for a taxi waiting in line to pick you up and take you to the port. Very convenient.

Two miles is only a short stroll. Maybe 30 minutes if you are just taking in the sites. If you are taking a cruise in September that goes South, why would the temperature matter? It's going to be hot on the cruise also.

Very walkable. I've done it several times. I stayed at the Hilton Riverside. I rolled luggage thru the mall. Dropped it off at port and then walked back to FQ to get something to eat and enjoy a bit more of NOLA.

A couple people might do this, but most wouldn't. You decide.

My post never mentioned the heat ... that was someone's response

Obviously, you've not experienced heat and humidity in the South. Going south in the Caribbean on a cruise is absolutely nothing compared to walking two miles in the humidity we have here. It would be much better to take a cab.
