  1. I remember the DOD deal the OP is speaking of. Every day they had a different colored cup. if you bought it for 7.95, you could get refils for 4.95. or you could buy the drink at 5.95 in a regular cup.

They came in these cups plastic_carnival_cruise_line_cups_by_wildelf34-d9xepi9.jpg

not sure if they still do it, I get cheers so I don't get those cups.

Yes, that was exactly what I was talking about!

Couldn't remember if they had it on my last cruise 2 years ago, but didn't think so.

Sad they don't have it anymore, as I love a good deal :D

  2. We were on the Magic recently and yes, the main pool was open later than in the past. There were people using it during the movies under the stars. I remember thinking I had never seen the pool open that late.

Thanks so much for your reply. My son and I had wanted to go in the pools in the evening on past cruises, but they were always closed, so this will be a nice option.

  3. It looks like on some of the fun times that I've seen, the pools stay open late.

I always remember the cruises we've been on in the past, that the pools have closed by about 7PM.

We will be on the Magic, and was wondering if the pools do indeed stay open late.

    Thanks!

  4. So I had purchased travel insurance the same day I purchased my cruise. Something kept nagging at me and prompted me to check on the coverage if (heaven forbid) one of my parents died while I am on my cruise and I need to go home (my Dad has diabetes). What I found is interesting to say the least. While most insurance companies will cover if a relative dies while you are away, they will NOT cover it if there was a way to foresee a possibility of them dying. For example, a parent who has been ill or diagnosed with some disease/heart condition/diabetes, etc...if they then die while you are away, you are NOT covered. A waiver of pre-existing conditions has nothing to do with relatives staying at home, so getting that will not help you either (pre-existing conditions only apply to the people traveling).

There is only ONE insurance company that will cover a death of an already ill or elderly family member who is not cruising with you, and that is Travel Guard. They are the only ones who say death is ALWAYS unforeseeable, and as such will cover any death of an immediate family member, no matter how sick they are already prior to you taking out insurance.

Now, if you were to call your insurance company, many will say all they need is a death certificate as proof and you will be covered. Please know this is NOT TRUE if the person already has a diagnosis of some sort before you take out insurance. Part of the evaluation of a claim is getting a doctor's certificate or statement that certifies this death was in no way foreseeable and not due to a prior diagnosed illness that has gotten worse.

Just a head's up, as my search found a lot of misinformation on threads about this topic.

Thanks for posting this as I had no idea. My dad is in rehab and is also diabetic. I went and checked what insurance I had purchased, and it was Travel Guard. That made me feel a lot better :)

  5. I had booked under the kids sail free promo. My TA cancelled that booking, and booked me under another deal which was actually cheaper. Had to pay $100. penalty, but since the price had dropped, it was worth it to us.

Just call Carnival if that's who you booked through, and they'll get it sorted out for you.

    Have a great time!

  6. All right everyone, we are back! I did my best to find answers to everyone's questions, however, I did not see a Circle C schedule anywhere...sorry to the poster who asked for that. I went by a few times and didn't see anything posted anywhere. I will say that on this cruise I saw hardly any kids, so maybe that had something to do with it?

Ok, to the poster who asked about ping pong tables: I saw 3, all outdoors. One I remember was by the water slide entrance, and I also noticed that twice during the 8 day cruise they had a ping pong tournament. Maybe your son will enjoy entering and winning? :)

To the poster who asked about the Italian restaurant, the Liberty doesn't have one. She does, however, have a Fish N Chips restaurant upstairs, and it seemed pretty deserted the first day or so, and then became VERY popular, so it must be good!

The shows onboard are the old style, with the full orchastra, and the ones we saw were great! The shows were: Let It Rock (or maybe it was called Just Rock? We didn't see this one), Singin' With the Big Band (also didn't see), Courtney and the Liberty Band (it was a concert they did one night and it was GREAT!), It's a Wonderful World (again, a GREAT show!!!!). They also had a ventriliquist one night who was quite good, and the Carnival Legends show, which we did not watch. I have to say, after being on the Breeze and then the Liberty, I MUCH prefer the old style shows!

To the poster who was curious about the port times in Aruba and Curacao: we were in Aruba from 1 until 10, which I loved. It was great to get to see the nightlife in port, and enjoy a nice dinner off the ship. We thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it made it VERY hard to get up the next morining at 7 a.m. for an 8 o'clock arrival in Curacao! We managed though.

To the poster who asked about the MDR food quality and the tables, the tables still had a tablecloth each night. As for the food quality, I found it just OK. I really didn't think I would care, however, after experiencing the menus firsthand I really wasn't impressed, and neither was my husband. I am really not a picky eater, but some nights I had to search to find something I wanted. The food itself was always warm and presented nicely. To anyone on Anytime Dining, Gideon and his team are FANTASTIC and you should ask for him. They were very attentive and quick to bring anything we needed or asked for. I did see Bitter and Blanc on the menu one night, as well as the Grand Mariner dessert.

To the poster curious about the Chocolate Extravaganza, yes they did have it the last sea day of the cruise. I am a chocolate lover, but I was happy enough to skip it, I didn't see anything that really appealed to me.

All in all, the Liberty is a really fantastic ship and I plan to do a review of her once we get settled back in. The service was top notch, from the room stewards to the dining staff to Guest Services. The ship itself is in good shape, maybe a light bulb or two blown here or there, but the staff are working hard to keep her looking good, they were always out cleaning and touching her up. The decor is grogeous, and we had a great time. I would absolutly sail on her again in a heartbeat!

Thank you so much for the info on the Ping pong tables :D My son may be interested in a tournament:) Glad to hear you had such a good time, can't wait to sail her! Was there shops or anything like that near the dock in Aruba? Thanks again!

  7. We camped once, with another family, a long time ago and my parents said "never again". Like you said, it was fun for us kids but not the adults. It wasn't a nice campground, kind of tacky and campsites were almost on top of each other, so no privacy.

The luggage weight, the one thing I don't like about cruising. We're going to some places we may never get to visit again and we would like to bring things back, so it's a pain always having to think "how am I going to get this back". We've considered bringing bottles of alcohol back but don't due to luggage weight. United charges $25.00 per checked bag and are now enforcing the size of carry-ons. An overweight check-in bag (over 50 lbs) was $100.00 last year. Heck, it would be cheaper to take two check-in and pay $50.00 instead.

I don't think I'd have been able to handle the cruise you were on out of Baltimore. I'd have been sick for sure. Was that on Carnival Pride? I'd love to do that one, but during the summer when it's warm. This time of year we get a lot of fog, low clouds and drizzle coming off the Atlantic/Chesapeake Bay (and we're inland) and I'd be freezing on a ship. Yes, the cruise we went on last year out of San Juan was fantastic. I would not hesitate to recommend that one. :)

You mentioned your first year anniversary cruise 21 years ago, were you married in 1992? That's the year DH and I were married. Our honeymoon was our first cruise.

We ended up seeing a lot of Canada camping, and I'm very grateful DH and I have the means to do some cruising with our boy's. The cruise out of Baltimore was the Pride. We were lucky that it was beautiful weather when we sailed away, and we were in tshirts :)

I just wish they would change the ship going out of there, as the Pride has been there at least 5 years now, and would be nice since it's so close to home to have another ship to choose from.

We were married in 1992, just like you :D We got married Labor Day weekend, and went to Club Med on Paradise Island in the Bahamas for our honeymoon. It' s no longer there because of Atlantis :( After cruising for our 1 year anniversary we didn't return to cruising until about 5years ago, and now I'm addicted! We did all inclusives for the past 2years, but with the poor entertainment last year, knew I needed to be back on a cruise ship.... What time of year were you married?

  8. The rum punches...you and me both!!! LOL!!!

On Valor we sailed out of San Juan and went to St. Thomas; Sea Day; Barbados; St. Lucia; St. Kitts; St. Maarten/St. Martin; back to San Juan. The prices for the cabins on this itinerary were a lot lower than the other itineraries, but airfare to and from San Juan is a little pricey. If you ever get a chance to do that itinerary, I say "go for it". The scenery and beauty of all of these islands is the best I've seen. With the exception of Barbados, all the others are very mountainous. Some people on our cruise said that St. Lucia reminded them a lot of Hawaii. I've never been to Hawaii, so I can't say for certain. Just very scenic.

So glad you have a cruise buddy in your son. My family never cruised so my first cruise was our honeymoon. My family used to spend a week every June in Nags Head, NC, and we've been there with friends here several times now. I just love it there! I'd love to try Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle area someday.

I wish we lived a little closer to FL...close enough to do the complete drive in a day and get a hotel close to the cruise terminal the night before the cruise. We could drive to Baltimore, but that would have to be a summer cruise. We've looked into that and the prices are a lot higher. I think a perk with driving would be not having to worry about how heavy my suitcase is.

My family never cruised either, they always took us camping. It was great fun for us kids, but I'm sure not as much fun for my mom. My 1st cruise was on the Carnival Holiday for DH and I's 1st year anniversary 21 years ago!! We had moved from Montreal to Florida at the time.

I am very lucky not to have to worry about how much the luggage weighs, that's just a real pain to me :( The itinerary you went on out of San Juan sounds fantastic! Will have to keep that one in mind :)

My kids 1st cruise was out of Baltimore almost 5 years ago, and we went at the beginning of November. Except for a hurricane nearby and almost getting flown about the ship, we had a great time :D The kids never felt bad at all, but I turned green for a few hours..lol..It was on our way back, so we never missed any ports or anything like that.

I have decided since jam man does such awesome reviews, to let him do one when he gets back from the Liberty :D

  9. We also always buy insurance, although never through the cruise line, as we can get a better deal on our own. You never know when you might get sick, and with 2 kids we're not willing to take the chance and loose thousands....
