  1. Carnival hedges their fuel purchases, so they're not paying prices reflective of the price of a barrel of oil.

So driving to the port and paying less for gasoline will be your only rebate.

  2. When you get your Master Mariner's License and are privy to all the facts, you can criticize the decision of the Captain all you want. If the Captain had tried to dock the ship in those conditions and ran aground or ran into the pier or into the reef, you (or someone) would've been saying he is irresponsible. He can't win either way with passengers, so he errs on the side of safety -- and rightly so.

I'm an airline pilot. I love it when a passenger gets off the plane and criticizes one of my landings, especially when they have no clue about the conditions I faced to land the plane. Or, when we have to divert to an alternate airport due to weather conditions and are low on fuel because of extensive holding and delay vectors and someone chimes in that they've landed in worse weather (or so they think).

Just last week I was landing in La Guardia. La Guardia is a very congested airport with short runways. I was landing a light A320 with a direct crosswind and it was quite a firm landing. One guy decided to make a comment about it and it took everything I had to bite my tongue as he walked off. He obviously had no clue about the conditions, nor did he have an ATP License, or he would've said "thank you" instead.

Sometimes, you just have to trust the professionals to do their jobs. Safety is #1. If you get inconvenienced, so be it. It's better than the alternative. Just as with airlines, the decision to divert, delay or cancel a flight is not an easy decision. Believe me, airlines don't like cancelling or delaying flights. It costs the airline lots of money to do so. I'm sure the Captain in this situation based his decision to cancel the port on the weather conditions, sea conditions and his extensive experience and knowledge and knowing how a 130,000 ton ship reacts.

I know. Everyone is an expert pilot in coach. I try and thank the pilots for a great flight if I see them on the way off the plane.

  3. Did you get the idea for your screen name from the "Leisure Suit Larry" computer games from the 90's. That's the kind of comment old Larry would of come up with. Love it.

LOL.... I think I remember seeing that game in stores back then, so maybe it stuck in the back of my mind. I do see the overlap though.

I came up with the screen name because let's face it- there's a lido deck larry on every cruise ship.

  4. Were any members of the cruise critic fashion police on board? If so, did they sweat it out in their tuxes and ball room gowns shaking their heads at everyone else wearing shorts??

  5. There is no bouncer turning unfashionable people away or making them stand in line forever. It's not an exclusive spot. The night club bar will happily take your money. So just wear what you normally wear to a club back home.

  6. I got a check for $50 from Carnival to enjoy dinner on them and a reimbursement check for $20 for my son after I wrote a letter upon returning from a cruise. My son had checked out a volleyball with his Sail and Sign and with a new group of teenage friends had initiated a game of volleyball. The ball was accidently knocked overboard and Carnival charged me the $20. My letter stated that a ball going overboard witnessed by so many including crew as purely an accident should have been considered a cost of doing business and not as a penalty to my son who wasn't the person who knocked it off the ship. Made me a loyal Carnival customer ever since.

Yeah, good call by Carnival on the volleyball. It's not like the kids meant for it to get lost.

  7. A perk of using the thalassotherapy pool is going from there to a great spa shower, and then off to relax on the heated loungers in one of the other therapy rooms, where you can relax with a cool libation, stare out at the gorgeous ocean view, and enjoy not being in the frozen Yukon. I will so be doing that in appox seven weeks. My arthritic joints will bless me, my hungover brain will recouperate. :):o:)

Oh yeah, those heated loungers are dope!

  8. We used the one on the Breeze a few weeks ago. It is much larger and has a long bench along one side. I thought the bench would be comfortable, but the jets are so strong you have to hold on for dear life! [emoji3] there are also a couple of fountain jets that you can run on your shoulders. I was actually disappointed that the thalassotherapy pool was not as relaxing as I had hoped. 4b99191ee838b9780e51ab169e28e6a7.jpg2ffba2fcecab13aba465844f1f778d80.jpg

Nice pool pics. I see what you're taking about with the jets. Quite different.

  9. "Thalassotherapy (from the Greek word thalassa, meaning "sea") is the medical use of seawater as a form of therapy.[1] It is based on the systematic use of seawater, sea products, and shore climate.[2] The properties of seawater are believed to have beneficial effects upon the pores of the skin.[citation needed]"

Wow.. the Bull---- detector is off the scale on that one. I don't think there is any actual theraputic benefit from salt water. Maybe Carnival can get some quack doctor to promote the benefits. Anywho, can anyone tell me the difference between this magical thalassotherapy pool and a lido deck hot tub? Since the lido pools use sea water too, I would assume one would gain the same "Thalassotherapy" benefits in a lido hot tub while saving themselves some serious $$$$ in not buying a spa pass? Personally, I prefer Alcohalassotherapy (Therapy derived from consumption of alcoholic beverages while standing / sitting in salt water.) Which is way more fun. :D
