  1. But then think too. . How much mail and even airport luggage goes missing with bar codes. I haven even received packages multiple times from both the usps, and the other package carriers that should have gone to other addresses. Mistakes can still be made.

I received my tags and while I did comment that the color choices were poor, it is certainly NOT unreadable. That’s a little over dramatic.

  2. I think you forgot the words 'in the US', this behaviour may be standard protocol in the US but not in the UK and many other parts of the world. When you tip the waiter do ask him to give some of that tip to the barman? As far as I know the waiter returns to the bar and the barman prepares the drinks. If the bar is full of people directly tipping the barman, then the waiter you tipped may still have to wait a while for your drinks to be prepared. ;)

To the person who was on about half price cocktails. I would say that a strong pour in a cocktail will give that cocktail a completely different taste, and surely your tipped barman would be foolish to stop you considering a second drink and therefore halving his tips.

Yes, this is how it works in the US as the ships works just like a US business. And yes, in the US in a land based bar/restaurant the waiter does tip out the bartender and they have dedicated areas for the waiter to order/pickup the drinks. It’s called the service bar. Many places will even have a dedicated bartender just for the service bar.

  3. Odd that I've not noticed this. Every time I go to a bar I'm served in the order that I pulled up at the bar, if I'm sat with an empty glass in front of me I'm always asked if I want a refill. The service is always great and always with a smile and maybe if the bars not too busy, a bit of conversation. I have never had to surreptitiously filter $1 to the barman.

I have a question about half price cocktails too. How do you know? NCL's tills work on the premise that the bartender enters the type of drink and the amount for that drink is billed to your stateroom. Does he only enter for half a cocktail? Do you run as quickly as possible to your stateroom, stopping only to wave dollar bills at your "priority" elevator, as soon as you can turn your TV on and check that your account was only charged for half a cocktail.

If people feel they want to tip the barstaff because they enjoyed the service then that's OK with me, it becomes a problem when people think they are tipping for better service. If they got better service then it really would be a problem.

I think people are getting caught up in the words “better service”. It’s really pretty simple and translates to land based bars as well. Tipping the bartender or server simply makes them pay attention to you more. I will repeat one of my last examples. I’m laying out at the pool and a server comes over, I order a drink. Server returns with the drink and I provide a tip. This specific server will repeatedly come back often to see if I need a refill. I am not saying that they don’t make their normal rounds but they certainly check on me more frequently. This is standard protocol at any bar. Not just on ships.

  4. They are happy to take your money. I really want to know the definition of better service, and how you know you get it.

It is well know that people in the service industry will make sure to take care of the people who tip them. It is especially true on a cruise ship with the foreign workers as the $ is worth more to them as it is to us.

For example: once I tip, the server or bartender will go out of their way to keep my drinks flowing. Many times having the drink already in the process of being made just because the see me walking towards them. Works out especially well on the pool deck with the servers walking around as I do t even have to get out of my seat if I don’t want to.

  5. I emailed the vendors and am waiting to hear back. It's much easier to pay in $100's! :D:Dclear.png?emoji-grin-1677

If it cost more than $100 then I don’t see the problem. But like you already said, you can always break the bills at the casino.

  6. Yes, Havana Nights and Jersey Boys can be booked currently by phone. Not sure about the Prohibition Show. Other shows do not require reservations, but NCL representative said to double check once on board to make sure the policy is the same, first come basis. I can only speak to Bliss sailing 6/2.

Do you know this with firsthand knowledge of booking your own shows?

I’m on the 6/16 sailing. Would love to know the dates and times of available shows.

  7. Maybe the cruise line can put an announcement in the dailies, stating its "green" efforts include the elimination of straws in drinks.

Although Starbucks gives them out, and there were tons of people with Starbucks drinks ...

Yea, I don’t get why Starbucks doesn’t have to abide by the straw ban.

  8. You seem to be missing my point...I find it silly to put in any effort (yes, taking out your phone and writing a post requires some level of effort) to complain about something so silly while on vacation.

No I understood your post. You seem to be missing my point in that it doesn’t matter if you find it silly. As I mentioned there are plenty people who use the internet including posting to cruise critic while on their cruise. Your post had nothing to do with the OPs topic (and neither did my response to you post). So that’s all I will say about that.

As far as the issue at hand, it would be nice if NCL replaced the plastic straws with some other form. But as other posters alluded to, it’s not only about the environment. It’s also about their profits. I for one would not enjoy drinking a frozen drink without a straw. So unless I hear differently I will have to bring my own. A minor inconvenience but so be it.

  9. A very real problem. Plenty of articles abound on the internet. It's why cities are starting to ban them too.

Banning them should not be the solution. Maybe more responsible laws on their use but banning something out right is just silly. Might as well ban the plastic cups and utensils while we are at it.

  10. I prefer unplugged vacations, but have no issue with people who want to stay plugged in. My confusion lies with why anyone would want to take the time (even just a moment) to complain to internet strangers while ON vacation. Once I am on a vacation, I am generally care free and adaptable. It takes a lot for something to upset me to the point that I dwell on it for any length of time.

My point is, many people still utilize cruise critic while on vacation. It takes no effort to make a post. So please don’t be confused. You are free to unplug while others will leisurely still peruse cruise critic and other sites.

  11. Don’t complain to anyone. It’s old news.

RCCL has talked about for a long time. They were talking about it again a few days before NCL implemented it a month and a half ago.

It is a great advancement in being green.

Not that old of news. If they want to complain then let them. I may not complain but knowing there is no straws, I will certainly bring my own.

  12. Plastic and paper straws can be recycled.

This is just a ridiculously cheap cost cutting move and could backfire by becoming the poster child for NCL nickel and diming.

I do not agree with NCL banning straws. I mean, who wants to drink an alcoholic beverage without a straw, especially a frozen drink? That being said, maybe there is a real problem with straws making it into the ocean?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. Wait, so you are on a cruise at this moment and took the time to complain about straws on an internet forum?

Believe it or not there are many people who still utilize cruise critic while they are on their cruise. That’s how you get the lovely “live” threads. It’s not really that hard or time consuming. Especially if you use the app.

  14. Hi All,

Going on a 2 night cruise end of June on Norwegian Jade. Does anyone have experience going on a 2 night cruise with NCL and if they sell the Cruise Next certificates to get the onboard credit on your current cruise?

    Thanks!

Just so you are not misinformed, it’s not really an onboard credit as it just goes against the price you pay for the certificates. For example: 2 certificates cost $500. You will get a credit of $250. So you pay a total of $250 for two certificates. You will not have any onboard credit that you will have to spend.

  15. OP, the best and ONLY way to get an accurate answer is to ignore all the comments on this thread except for the one that said to call the port authority and ask.

People post here sometimes trying to avoid having to make a phone call. I know I would do everything in my power to avoid making a phone call. It isn’t the easiest thing these days to get a human on the phone, let alone one that has the exact knowledge you are looking for. In the end they may need to call or email the port authority, or even ask once they arrive but there is no problem in looking for an answer here first.

  16. Thanks! I am not sure I get the shoes must cover ankles part.

Toes yes - but ankles? Are we to pack boots?

You don’t need boots to cover your ankle. Most regular tennis shoes will do.

  17. Lets see if I can make any sense out of this.

First off the night before the cruise ended did you put tags on your bags and place them outside your cabin door ?

    {This is not the walk-off-with-luggage program.}

The bags outside your cabin door are collected by NCL crew and taken to a hold below to be off loaded when

the ship arrives and then are placed in designated areas for customer pick-up.

If you purchased the Transfer package your bags would be in that designated area and you would have to

claim them and take them through Customs.

After that you would be directed to the staging area for the buses providing the Transfers.

Your bags would be loaded on the bus that is taking you to the airport or other transportation means.

At the airport the bags are off loaded at the airline curb and you take them with you to the check-in counter.

Did you claim your bags to go with you through Customs ?

If not the bags may have been left in a NCL controlled area.

When you got to the staging area of Transfer buses did you have your bags ?

Did you see if any bags were being loaded on the bus ?

It is common for the bus driver to load bags such that the last bag on will be the first bag off at destination.

In this case the driver will ask questions about what airline or stop you are going to - to do this.

The bus driver should have questioned you about where is your baggage ?

If there were many buses your bags could have been loaded on the wrong bus without direction.

If you did not see any bags being loaded they could have been preloaded in advance - again perhaps

put on the wrong bus. This is an odd arrangement in that the baggage is not with you for Customs clearance.

In any event here NCL and the Transfer bus service are at fault.

The Port Authority of NYC comes into play when a bag is not claimed and its disposition is unknown and

taking it to a Lost & Found office.

Obviously you did not have your baggage to check-in with the airline.

Questions should have been directed to the Transfer Bus Driver about where the baggage is if that was the case.

HOPEFULLY YOU HAD ID TAGS ON THE BAGS and something identifiable inside to reunited it with you !

You posted that your baggage is INTRANSIT to you - I take it that the baggage has been located and is now

    being sent to you ?

If not then see if your travel insurance if you took out a policy covers the loss.

Quite a mess lacking in communication and direction - send NCL the email/letter - addresses and information

previously posted - my post number 9 !

The bag was found in the terminal after we had caught our flight. They called us to inform us they would be sending our bag by DHL at NCL's expense. Now it is stuck in Canada at customs and we are waiting for it to be released after submitting paperwork to them. Very frustrating and now we are being asked to pay a brokerage fee to have it released. We usually walk our bags off but thought it would be easier to purchase the Airport transfer on the ship. Lesson learned.

This is still a little confusing. As the other poster mentioned, did you pick up your bags and walk them through customs? If not then that is where the problem probably started.

  18. Yup the key is last minute booking out of NYC. Also early and late summer especially to Bermuda

Again I'm just stating in this thread that ncl has raised prices significantly imho on their summer 2019 cruises in the Med...same older ship..same itins..same 7 day runs...over what they were charging in 2017 and in many cases 2018

NYC pricing is not what I'm talking about but yes I've gotten great deals on ncl out of NYC especially in January longer Carib cruises when the older kids had college break

As others have already pointed out (and you have already self admitted) is the law of economics supply and demand. Any goods or services will be priced at it’s value. And it’s value is determined by what people are willing to pay. So prices will continue to rise if people continue to pay. It’s your choice to decide when it gets too expensive for you.

I don’t believe this is specific to NCL. I think you will find similar prices throughout all the main lines.

  19. Actually, it is not "free". NCL now offers "sailaway" rates with no perks. It is no longer a last minute thing on many cruises. I view that difference as the cost of the perks.

This is how people incorrectly view the sail away rates. In reality the sail away rates are GTY, which means I cannot choose my cabin location and can be put in a very bad location. That may work for some people but for the majority of people that doesn’t work. In which case I am already purchasing a non-sailaway cabin, hence my UBP is free since I am paying the same amount whether I choose the UBP as my perk or not.
