  1. Everyone drink one for me please! I'm trapped here at work since this is my overnight and graduation week really highlights that I work with a bunch of snobby people. I could set myself on fire right now and no one would bat an eye.

First off, I need to thank all of you for letting me escape reality and ready your adventures. My dad passed away unexpectedly early Sunday morning. If you could keep us in your thoughts-or prayers if it's your thing-I'd appreciate it.  Anyway, I had to come into work for a few hours today because the place literally can't function without me, they didn't even get the mail. I swear, I don't know how these people tie their shoes every morning.  Thanks again for giving me a few minutes of normalcy this morning.

I'm so sorry for your loss! My heart goes out to you and your family. And I'm sending a virtual boot in the butt to your work place so they will get their ish together enough to let you take the time you need. Seriously they couldn't even have someone grab the mail?!?!

  3. Next week is a hell week for work because its the last week of our current class. Super busy, lots of stress, and the people I work with who are generally tolerable ramp up their clique-y bs. The recruits will be good and graduation will be nice.

On the upside it is confirmed that the DH and I are going to NYC for about a week mid-December. My SIL and her wife have a place in Brooklyn so we will stay with them. They are lots of fun and the cocktails will be spectacular! I'm planning on saving the holiday shopping for after the trip. Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, 5th Ave., 9/11 Memorial, and just everything! DH grew up in Queens and was a recruiter in the city but I've really never spent any time in the city.

More immediately one of our friends just messaged us to say he made a batch of homemade Italian sausages so we are having a tasting party....any wine suggestions Sid?

  4. Sid get some plain saline nasal spray. Two spritzes in each nostril morning and bedtime. I grew up with wood heat which made things so dry that I was always having nosebleeds. They actually talked about cauterizing my nostrils one year. Fortunately the saline works as long as I remember to do it every day.

So . . . my brother died yesterday afternoon.  He was diagnosed with ALS in January. Just took 10 months to rob him of his life.  He was a young athletic 75.

I'm so sorry for your loss

  6. TGIF! After 3 classroom days teaching the gang how to investigate the truly terrible things some people do to others I am glad to get back to read about cuban sandwiches, food p0rn, cats, sober nights, beer, wine, cocktails, and bike rides. Definitely needed after the topics I have covered with my fellow instructors!

We have our first snow of the year last night and into today. It didn't accumulate much, just enough to make the smart folks pay attention on the commute to work. And it is freaking cold! I had to put on the space heater in my office and am snuggling my coffee.

I have a three day weekend starting this afternoon because we close for Veteran's Day. I may even slide out early so I can get groceries before everyone else in town descends on the stores. I need to buy some ribeyes for Sunday as my stepson, daughter-in-law, and grandkids are coming for dinner. Steaks, baked potato, veggies and a couple of semi-homemade apple tarts are on the menu.

Another exciting bit of news (for me at least) my husband and I have decided to go to NYC for a few days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. My sister-in-law and her wife live in Brooklyn so we will probably stay with them....yay! They are lots of fun and the cocktails will be delightful at their house!

Hope everyone has some nice weekend plans!

Some of you might remember my posting pictures this summer of the summer home in the 1000 Islands that has been in our family for about 130 years. Big wind storm there yesterday and we lost one of the boathouses. Sad! My sister and cousin have been sending me pictures like this one...

Oh wow I am so sorry! I know that storm was a mess in Northern VT. I know folks up there that still don't have power and couldn't get in or out for a few days from flooding. FEMA is getting involved.

  8. Waiting for one of my instructors to finish his class so the in-service students can leave. At the rate he's going the full time recruits will be gone before I can leave. Well at least I won't get caught in their traffic jam where our road meets the main drag.

    Beer o'clock is nearly here!

  9. Still a zero percent chance of me taking a cruise any time soon but.....

Just got approved at work to go to a conference in DC next April! Super excited as I have been wanting to go this particular conference for the past decade. Plus DC which I love....and so many possibilities for food porn! I better learn to post pictures.😁

    Thanks everyone for posting!

You've all kept me company after my surgery. I had to have an abdominal surgery and haven't been able to work for a week. I was already off almost a month last month for medical reasons. My birthday is next month and I usually take a week off for that, which considering how kind my work has been regarding the above.. I felt like asking for a week off for my birthday was pushing it a little bit. But they let me have it off! and my husband suggested seeing if there were any last minute cruises available, so we're going on Carnivals cruise to Catalina & Ensenada. It's been a rough month and a half for us, so hopefully we can just chill out and enjoy being on vacation. It feels odd to have a cruise booked and then we have an Alaska one booked for next year but I'm excited! We've done this one before on Princess instead of Carnival, so I think it will be more low key since we did 3 excursions on Catalina and we went to Ensenada already too. We also got a ocean view room instead of a balcony that we usually get just to see how it goes. It's funny because the hotel room for one night was practically the same cost as one of us for the 4 day cruise. Tomorrow is my last day off before going back and I'm a little scared to try driving. The doctors office said 7-10 days before driving.. so I'll have to try it tomorrow by going somewhere close by/driving around the block first.

Speedy healing! I'm a veteran of 2 abdominal surgeries...thankfully both laparoscopic. The incisions in the belt-line were the worst to heal up. I recommend some pantyliners to pad your waistband if there's rubbing.

Speaking of wine, have you ever checked out the Living Wine Label app?  If your wine has a living label you can scan it and it comes to life.  The Walking Dead labels are amazing!

I was gifted a bottle of one of The Walking Dead labels for my birthday....loved the label but haven't cracked it yet. Are they any good?

That is sparkling water, right? I received a free sample 4-pack of Perrier Juice Drink. It is mostly sparkling water with a light fruit taste ( something like 8% juice). I tried it with rum and it was pretty good. I will look around for the grapefruit Pelegrín and try that. I also might just break down and buy more Fresca than I want. Choices choices, lol.

It's more like soda than their sparkling water....has plenty of sugar in it and I think some juice. Lots more flavor than sparkling water. It comes in a range of flavors too. I like the lemon as well but the others are usually too sweet for me....blood orange, pomegranate, etc

That's interesting. The only ethnic store near us is a Chinese supermarket. But I will keep that in mind and see if I can find it anywhere else. Thanks!

San Pellegrino makes a grapefruit flavor that is my go to for tequila cocktails. Their Pompelmo with tequila and a healthy "squoze" (Sid-ism!) of lime on the rocks is yummy! And as close to a paloma as I am likely to get here in VT.

I also make "ghetto margaritas" by mixing tequila with frozen limeade concentrate and enough water/ice to stop it from making you squint. That makes pitchers though so maybe bring a friend.....LOL or not!

Great review.  I am really enjoying it.  I have never heard of the Beaver Tails.....but it looks delicious.  I'm very familiar with Poutine - my brother owns a restaurant in Burlington VT and gets loads of Canadian tourists in for lunch/dinner.  Poutine is a staple on his menu!

It looks to me as if Quebec is a "walking" city so anyone with mobility issues should be aware.  Am I correct in my assessment?

Which restaurant? I'm often up that way for meetings and in need of a good place to eat.

  15. Holy heck it is a Monday for sure! 2 recruits on crutches and my lovely state issued computer is fast turning itself into a paperweight! If you hear yelling and the sound of a laptop going through a window from the southern part of VT....no worries, just me.

    Welcome home Sid!

  16. For those of you who are not already AARP members Walgreens sometimes gives free one year memberships if you buy several of their house brand products at a time. Just watch the strip of coupons they give you at the register. I have been able to extend my husband's membership (which includes me) a couple of times this way. I haven't found any way to tell when Walgreens is going to give this benefit.
