  1. I was thinking of flying in to Barcelona before our cruise out of Rome. We'd be there about 26 hours (short I know, but I missed seeing the La Familia Sagrada last time, and I WILL see it!!).

I was thinking of leaving our bigger bags in the airport, and just take a backpack or two for the 1 day. Has anyone done this? Any issues with theft there?

    thanks.

  2. im looking at a summer 2020 Italy/Greece itinerary out of Rome on the Getaway. Decks available are 8, 9, 10. Which side would you recommend for our balcony room ? I think the outdoor smoking area is on starboard 8, but I wasn’t sure if that would cause issues in deck 10.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!

  3. After 4 NCL cruises I'm still not sure whether there's any logic to the boarding process. They ask you for your expected check-in time when you complete the online check-in process, but I can't say whether this matters at all once you get to the pier. You are given a boarding group number when you arrive, but it seems to me like that's based on when you arrive and how many people arrived ahead of you and has nothing to do with what you pre-selected during online check-in.

This cruise, for example, we arrived at about 10:15 and were given boarding group 20! I can't ever remember getting such a high group number, but like I said, there were a lot of people ahead of us that morning. The funny thing is, though, the boarding group numbers don't really seem to mean much either with regard to how long you'll wait to get on board. When they started calling numbers they called individual groups, up to about boarding group 6, I think, with only a couple minutes between each group number. After 6, they said anyone with numbers 7-20 could board. We were happy that we weren't going to have to wait all the way until they called 20, but we couldn't understand how they went from calling one group at a time to calling for like 13 groups at once.

All that is a long way of saying I have no clue.

    thanks!!

  4. Sorry if this has been asked and answered before (I couldn't find it in search). We were on the Jewel of the Seas (RCCL) this past March. We used My Time Dining and has a reserved time each night in the MDR. We were asked after our 1st meal if we wanted to reserve the same table (ie have the same staff) for the rest of the cruise

Is this something done on NCL too? My daughter has Celiac so having someone aware of her food allergies was very helpful.

    thanks.

  5. The ship didn’t allow passengers to begin boarding until about 11:30, which also seemed a bit later than other cruises we’ve been on. This can certainly vary from cruise to cruise, not to mention from terminal to terminal, but it became a sort of theme for this cruise throughout the week: things that are typically done faster/better on other ships (or in this case, other ports), just seemed a bit off on Escape.

Newbie question....are you given a boarding time/group or is at a free for all? I wasn't sure if it was different on one of the bigger ships.

Great review! Love your style (and i'm seriously craving pizza right now!!)

  6. Not a fan of the POA. The food was meh, the decor was meh, and there was very little to do on the ship itself.

Would I take her again? Heck to the yeah! That is the single best way to see Hawaii. Like others have said, it's a floating hotel. You don't need to deal with airports. You get to see all of the islands and the view when you pass the Napali Coast can't be beat.

For excursions, we booked most of them on our own.

Oahu - came in a couple of days early. We rented a car and went the North Shore and Turtle Bay. We made it our goal to get as much shave ice as we could. We went on a Hawaii 5-0 site visit (fun if you're a fan), we hiked Diamond Head (total cattle call...recommend Koko Crater instead), went to Duke's for the best fish tacos ever...and of course, Pearl Harbor.

Maui - we'd been before so we skipped the Hana Highway. We rented a car and went to Lahaina to go on a whale watching cruise with Trilogy. Highly recommend!! We tried to do sunset on Haleakala, but my son fell and we needed to head down to get bandaids. We ended up watching sunset on a beach down in Waimea. The 2nd day, we took a West Lobe tour with Emily https://epicexperiencemaui.com/guides/ Best day ever!

Hilo - we did a NCL tour to Volcanos National Park. Not impressed. More car time than anything at the park.

Kona - a helicopter tour over the volcanos with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. aaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing (and i'm afraid of heights)

Kauai - we did that big monster 11 hour Journey excursion. HATED it. If i were to go back, I'd rent a car and go to Waimea Canyon and the Luau on our own. The rest was a waste. Spent more time at an orchid store than we did the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

The 2nd day we did another excursion with NCL to the lava tubes. The same tour is available direct with Kauai Back Country, but the timing was a bit too close for my comfort, so i paid extra with NCL to be sure we'd get back on time. Good, but not great. The kids had fun. Water was a lot colder than i expected. The staff was great though.

Our flight back home on the last day ended up being delayed 11 hours. We spent the afternoon at ziplining at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu. Super fun, but very expensive

Overall, it was the best vacation we have ever taken. We were on POA for dinner and sleeping. Don't let the reviews stop you from taking the trip. Aloha!!

  7. Last year I was planning on flying to New Orleans to visit my sister in law. She passed away about 2 weeks before we were due to travel. I called AA to cancel my flight. I didn't have travel insurance, so i figured i was out of luck. They gave me compassion and gave us $1250 in future credit. It was an incredible gesture in a bad time.

I've since learned to always always always get trip insurance, and maybe-just-maybe someone can be kind along the way.

Sorry about your brother. Peace to your family.
