Honolulu~March 7 Exploring the Crown Princess~Gala Deck (4) The guest areas of the Gala deck are pretty much the medical department (which I hope to have no opportunity to photograph this cruise) & the gangway area. They will usually have a table filled with towels to take ashore & a bin to return them in on your way back. Disembarking they will scan your Medallion as you leave the ship. On your return your Medallion will be scanned to get into the terminal & again to get on the ship. Metal detectors & scanning of your belongings will either happen in the terminal or onboard. In Honolulu it happened ashore in the terminal. Often when you are exiting or entering the ship, you will be able to see into the long hallways in the crew areas of the Gala deck. Honolulu~March 7 Onboard the Crown A few shipboard things I discovered…the International Cafe does have soup, it is just way behind the counter, they have full rolls of flatware way off to one side & they will heat your sandwich if you ask…they have the toaster oven rather than the press that most older ships do…also the naturalist’s enrichment lectures are now starting to be added to the TV menu in addition to Tiki Dave’s port talks. Unlike the last time we had an overnight stay in a tender port where they closed down for the night, the gangway remained open all night. This meant that many of the crew were going out to explore Honolulu after getting off work. We saw several leaving as we were returning from our excursion. SInce my sister stayed aboard, she was able to go to the Folkloric Performance with Halau Lilia Makonaoe. We were unable to do this on earlier cruises because we had late excursions. She said it was wonderful. She enjoyed her restful, relaxing day onboarrd & was able to find food she liked in the International Cafe. Honolulu~March 7 Polynesian Cultural Center~Ha Breath of Life Show, Maps & Flyers, Thoughts The show was my favorite part of the day & I really wish I could have seen it all. Our driver told us that we had to leave before the show was over so that we would be the first bus out. Maybe three quarters of our group left at the time he told us to. This meant that we missed a substantial part of a show we paid a lot to see & we didn't leave early. In the end, even with leaving later than our driver wanted, we were still back before the excursion was supposed to return & well before the ship would have sailed. The Polynesian Cultural Center is well worth doing, but the Princess excursion is not ideal. If you are on a single day stay in Honolulu, I don't think there is another safe option to assure you get back to the ship before sailing, but I wish, when they told us that we were overnighting in Honolulu, I had canceled & rebooked directly with the Polynesian Cultural Center. usually but NOT always for various reasons it was not listed in the Patter for our current Crown cruise, but even though boarding was delayed DaVinci was open for MDR lunch

the excursion included both when I booked it...I even printed it out, because in the past I have thought what I booked was not what the excursion was but then maybe I remembered wrong so for the excursions this cruise that they changed I know they are not what we paid for...I expect to pay more for a Princess excursion, because of the promise not to sail without us, but with the changes it was very nearly double what the price of booking with the PCC directly & using their transportation, which is very steep.

Honolulu~March 7 Polynesian Cultural Center~Gateway Buffet After Samoa, it was time to head to the buffet. When I originally booked this excursion,it included the Luau, but two days before we reached Honolulu, we got letter saying that we would be going to the buffet, not the luau. I knew to expect this already from my online cruising friends, but this is the second excursion this cruise that Princess has taken things away after the excursion was purchased without lowering the price. Having been to several luaus, this was not a deal breaker as long as they had the luau food. The building the buffet was in was very large & open with murals of Hawai'ian history & shell shaped lighting fixtures around the room. The buffet had all the expected luau food & more. It was very extensive & quite delicious. The buffet was well organized into sections. They even had a QR code to scan that will take you to a page that lists the foods that are safe for people with specific food allergies. The photos only show a portion of the foods offered. ube icecream There was a guitar duo playing mostly requests, during dinner. We were done well before the show started, so could have spent more time in the villages. Honolulu~March 7 Polynesian Cultural Center~Spending Time in Samoa We spent the most time in Samoa. I made a coconut leaf fish toy. We also saw coconut tree climbing, fire knife dancing (interesting that now, in a break with tradition, women as well as men are allowed to do these dances), watched them make fire & split coconuts. Honolulu~March 7 Polynesian Cultural Center~Exploring the Islands of Polynesia Inside the village area, our first stop was the Hawai’ian Journey Theater where they showed an immersive video traveling around & over the islands of Hawai’i & connecting to the history & culture of the Hawai’ian people. Since our time was limited, we decided that by taking the narrated canoe ride from the south landing to the north one, we could see the villages. The canoe driver/guide shared a bit about each island nation, what presentations & activities they had & their word of greeting. For Samoa we said talofa, Rapa Nui didn’t have a greeting, but we saw the stone statues, at Aotearoa (which our guide said is pronounced New Zealand) we said kia ora, Tonga was malo e leilei, Fuji was bula vinaka, Tahiti was la ora na & the easy one, for Hawai’i we said aloha! This helped us know where we wanted to focus. I had downloaded the Polynesian Cultural Center app, but actually found the printed map with the schedule of activities much more helpful. Next was quickly exploring as many of the villages as possible. One of the highlights was trying coconut bread baked in an underground Tahitian oven. The best part was talking to the various students about their cultures & homes. I learned interesting things about foods, their traditional dress & life on their islands. With a little more time to go carefully through each area, there was so much more we could have enjoyed & learned. Honolulu~March 7 Polynesian Cultural Center~Getting In It was definitely after 2 by the time our driver got our tickets, passed them out & gave us instructions & maps. He told us that we were supposed to go to the buffet at 5. This gave us less than 3 hours which was not nearly enough time to see everything, especially at handicapped walker speed. The Hukilau Marketplace is a large shopping & food area before you get into the ticketed area of island villages. Honolulu~March 7 Polynesian Cultural Center~Getting There We headed out early to get in line for our excursion to the Polynesian Cultural Center as BIL moves slowly with his wheeled walker. They let us onto the bus about 45 minutes before our designated time to assemble which was nice for us, however…they loaded the two groups with people with mobility issues who were there early first but then let everyone else board as they arrived without reserving any more seats in the front section so anyone with mobility issues who came on time (or even less early than we started loading) were stuck going all the way to the back. While we were waiting for the rest of our group to arrive, Cousin Guy, our driver, shared some info about our excursion & Hawai'ian culture, & language. We waited a few minutes after our designated time for the last three people, who never showed up, until someone on the ship said we could leave. As we headed out through Honolulu toward La’ie. It was a long, but beautiful drive. We headed out of Honolulu & soon were traveling past miles of beautiful coastline (so many places that would have been wonderful to stop & spend some time at). Cousin Guy shared a lot of local history & especially about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There was construction on the road, so it was almost 2pm by the time we arrived. Honolulu~March 7 Good Morning, Honolulu Around 2am there was a call for some type of emergency response team to the Horizon Court…we never did find out what it was for. Sailing into Honolulu harbor was lovely, it was warm but cloudy with some drizzles. Up at the buffet for breakfast & saw the strangest boat sail in, which turned out to be for tracking missile tests. My sister wasn’t feeling well (she’s fine now) & decided she wasn’t up to going to the Polynesian Cultural Center (she’s been before & more recently than I have) so I went down to see if there was anything we could do about her ticket. I was actually surprised that the excursion desk was open. I told the man there that I knew it was too late to cancel but that she wasn’t able to go & we were wondering if there was anyone who was still looking for a ticket. He asked me which excursion & said he had canceled it, We had the refund immediately. Sea Day~March 6 Wrap Up & Random Thoughts The captain announced this evening that we will not be able to safely enter Nawiliwili harbor on Wednesday, so they have decided to overnight in Honolulu. I would have liked to have gone to the fern grotto, but Kauai is probably the island I will be least sad to miss. They have already removed those excursions from our accounts...so we have a bunch more OBC. Now we get to come up with more adventures on Oahu. The sea days have been lovely but I'm looking forward to Honolulu tomorrow. Sea Day~March 6 DaVinci Dinner We thought maybe our dining room confusion was a thing of the past, but there was a little hiccup again tonight. Our table was still occupied when we arrived, but they gave us a table next to our waiter’s section & had him take care of us. Sometimes I look around the dining room at meals & wonder where the problem is; meals are slow & take way too long, there are empty tables, but people are waiting in lines to be seated, ordered items never appear…there is something not quite right with the way they are managing but I am not sure what it is. just had this on the Crown the other night I saw this being served in the MDR & asked what it was...the Love Boat Dream, so the next night I ordered it...so much better than the 'red thing version' on our last cruise...it still has a shortbread cookie on the bottom, but you can just ignore that it is back to the chocolate mousse & rasberry coulis, I like the puddle of it on the top (easier to eat than scraping it off the plate)...everyone will have their own opinion, but I felt like it was a pretty reasonable replacement for the original (our waiter said they had switched from the 'red thing' for the last two cruises)
