  1. Shame the weather wasn't kinder. It's a steep walk to the citadel, but well worth it. The most memorable thing about Halifax for me, apart from the beautiful scenery as you glide further out from the city on leaving, is the history. The most powerful non-nuclear blast in history when, in 1917, the French carrier Mont Blanc, loaded with explosives and ammunition, collided with another vessel in the harbour, and caught fire. After drifting abandoned by its crew for 20 minutes, it exploded. Over 2,000 people killed, many survivors carried life-long injuries, and most homes and buildings were destroyed. The blackened damage is still visible high up at the citadel. Really sobering. I still remember those details from 2008, when we sailed on Norwegian Jewel. I remember the beauty of that region so vividly. I know Lyle and Lyn will really enjoy this cruise to this beautiful part of our world.
  2. It is indeed the total experience, and I confess we are Oceania regulars. Lobster isn’t everywhere though. It is offered in one or two of the specialty restaurants, which, btw, have no surcharge. Yes, the fare is steeper, but teas, barista coffees (real coffee), pastries, etc. all available all day from Baristas Cafe are all included. We have sailed Seabourn, Silversea, Viking and Norwegian and I would place Oceania in the middle of these four. Viking is also more expensive, but apart from the stunning design and decor of the vessels, it didn’t match Oceania for total ambiance and experience. Horses for courses, but I’m sure we’d also enjoy many aspects of a HAL cruise.
  3. I concur. We were in a Vista Suite last September, and although we were also provided with the in-suite bottles, we rarely touched them. We also upgraded to the premium package, because we enjoy wine with dinner, and a cocktail prior. We rarely imbibe in our suite, as we prefer to be out and about aboard, enjoying a drink in company.
  4. No, you’re right on time, and thanks, Lyle. Daren’t reveal how many years😜. Just returned home after a lovely dining experience at our favourite local restaurant. Still the 23rd here for another 2-1/4 hrs approx. Looking forward very much to following your East Coast adventure. I’d return there in a heartbeat. Loved the history, stunning scenery, culture and cuisine. Please post the whole nine yards😂
  5. Yes, please, Lyle. This household is interested in all aspects of your trip experience: pre, post, and the cruise itself. Happy birthday for tomorrow. I had remembered it was 23 August, but forgot we're way ahead of you time-wise. Today is 23 August here in Australia. It's also our wedding anniversary. Smooth sailing; looking forward to following your observations.
  6. I concur on all points. The memories to carry are many, but the two most important, for me, are their graciousness in defeat, and the tremendous, unparalleled swell of national support, from political opponents to followers of all sporting codes. Well done, Matildas.
  7. Enjoy your exciting adventure, Lyle and Lyn. Happy Birthday for tomorrow, too, if my memory serves me correctly, Lyle. Haven't visited the HAL board, but will now to follow your blog. Smooth seas and fair winds, Linda and Mario
  8. Third for Rydges. Haven’t dined there yet, because our last few flights have seen us clearing customs, etc. evening, after an in-flight meal. A few steps with a luggage trolley. Already booked 2 nights for next year (leaving and arriving). Novotel, btw, is really good, offering excellent dining. It does partake in a shuttle, but it can be quite full by the time it arrives at the hotel, and once passed right by. Taxi drivers aren’t so keen on the short ride to the international terminal.
  9. Good for you! It’s really tough with split allegiances. England will be a real challenge: the one game I watched showed their discipline and impressive skills. This Wednesday’s match should be the final, so it’s a shame one of these great teams will drop out.
  10. I confess to knowing little of the finer points of AFL, although my beloved Melbourne uncle served many years on the Hawthorn Board, and played cricket for Hawthorn. I do enjoy watching the odd game though. But tonight, Australia belonged to the magnificent Matildas, who somehow, through sheer determination, and though almost dropping from exhaustion, prevailed against the mighty French. What a heart-stopping, never-ending, riveting show to the final penalty. I needed the medicinal balm of a wee dram (or two). First time in history, we’re through to the World Cup semis. Go you good things!🇦🇺
  11. I love the nationwide support. Biggest tv audience this year, on Monday. Go Tillies!
  12. My birthday wish for you at this little concert is: “Mull of Kintyre” with massed pipes and drums. Still sends tingles and shivers.
  13. That’s hilarious. Going with “the vibe” is good.
  14. Each day at a time, Les. I could rage at the universe for you, but then seeing all the support and admiration for you here truly warms my heart. We were in Batehaven Thursday so felt close. Hang in there, we’re all with you in spirit🥰
  15. I agree that pre-existing conditions are a real problem, and probably why more people don't travel.
  16. I've noticed a few of your recent posts on various topics, Les, so thought I'd revisit this great CC community thread to ask how you're feeling at the moment. Always thinking of you. Linda and Mario
